Portland's Traffic Deaths Decrease by 16% in 2024: Ongoing Efforts and Legal Support Emphasized

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has released its 2024 Deadly Traffic Crash Report, revealing a 16% reduction in traffic fatalities compared to 2023. In 2024, 58 individuals lost their lives in traffic incidents, down from a record high of 69 deaths in 2023.

Despite this progress, the number of fatalities remains significantly higher than the pre-pandemic average of 41 deaths per year between 2015 and 2019. Notably, 71% of these fatalities occurred on the city's High Crash Network—30 streets and intersections that represent only 8% of Portland's roadways but accounted for 62% of traffic deaths from 2018 to 2022.

PBOT's Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries through infrastructure improvements, education, and enforcement. In 2024, efforts included reducing speed limits on 23 miles of streets and installing additional street lighting on high-crash corridors.

While these measures are steps in the right direction, the persistence of traffic fatalities underscores the importance of legal support for those affected by such incidents. The Harlan Law Firm, based in Vancouver, WA, offers experienced legal assistance to individuals involved in traffic collisions in both Oregon and Washington. Their team is committed to guiding clients through the complexities of personal injury claims, ensuring that victims and their families receive the support and compensation they deserve.
