Recognized as a Top Professional in education, for more than 35 years Dr. Gillen has made significant contributions to advancements in neurological rehabilitation.

An Early Focus on Neurology

Dr. Gillen began practicing occupational therapy in 1989. His areas of expertise included a concentration on neurological rehabilitation, particularly stroke care. "I was infatuated with the brain and with treating brain damage. And that focused my trajectory for the rest of my career," he says. As a registered occupational therapist, he worked across long-term care, acute care, inpatient rehabilitation and home care. Eventually, he transitioned into higher education.

"After a few years of work at the hospital, Columbia University asked me to do some guest lectures and lab work with the students," Dr. Gillen says. "I started to really enjoy teaching." At the institution, he progressed from assistant professor to full professor. For many years, he taught while serving at Columbia University Medical Center.

An Educator with a Global Reach

In his current role, Dr. Gillen teaches, advises and mentors occupational therapy students. He attributes much of his professional growth to clinical excellence. "I always modeled what I wanted other people to do in the clinic by what I did," he says.

Dr. Gillen's dedication to modeling best practices extended into teaching on a global scale. "I was traveling the states and internationally, doing weekends and continuing education courses," he says. Over the years, he has conducted about 200 weekend courses. This endeavor helped him reach audiences far beyond his immediate practice.

In 1996, Dr. Gillen wrote "Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach. "The book is in its fifth edition and has been translated into multiple languages. He has also published or edited other key texts, including "Willard and Spackman's Occupational Therapy." This work iswidely regarded as the most widely used occupational therapy textbook in the United States and internationally. His writing extends further to more than 200 articles and textbooks that continue to serve as resources for practitioners and students.

Academic Degrees and Professional Associations

Dr. Gillen holds a Doctor of Education degree in health education from Teachers College at Columbia University. Previously, he earned a Master of Public Administration in health management from New York University, having initially graduated with a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from New York University.

To remain current with developments affecting his field, Dr. Gillen has remained active with the New York State Occupational Therapy Association. In addition, he is a fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Among the highlights of his career, Dr. Gillen received the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award from the American Occupational Therapy Association in 2013. This recognition is considered the highest academic honor in the field, which he received in front of 7,000 attendees. He views the award as a milestone that reflects a lifelong commitment to patients and education.

Commitment to Volunteerism and Occupational Therapy

Outside his academic responsibilities, Dr. Gillen volunteers with the Columbia-Harlem Health and Medical Partnership. He is committed to engaging with his Hell's Kitchen neighborhood and aspires to work with organizations that support at-risk youth. His goal is to contribute to safe community spaces that provide tutoring and exposure to the arts, including programs featuring Broadway actors.

In his spare time, Dr. Gillen enjoys attending Broadway shows, spending time at the beach and dining with friends. His appreciation for culture and community reflects his vision of supporting youth programs connecting education and the arts.
