Marquis Who's Who Honors Steven Cantrell for Excellence in Health Care

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / September 30, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Steven Cantrell for excellence in health care. As president and chief executive officer of MacKen Associates since 2005, Mr. Cantrell has provided contracting, guidance and strategic direction for health care organizations. In the process, he has built a reputation for improving patient care and guiding organizations toward financial stability.

Leadership in Sustainable Health Care Growth

Mr. Cantrell also serves as the founding president of MedEx Urgent Care, which he established in 2021, after a personal experience highlighted gaps in urgent care services. The center diagnoses illness and prescribes medication while prioritizing patients by listening to them and treating them as individuals.

Early in his career, Mr. Cantrell served as chief strategy and network development officer at Graybill Medical Group in San Diego, where he assisted struggling entities with contracting, development and brand expansion. Additionally, he guided organizations through separations from networks to operate independently and profitably.

Success in Health Care

In 1991, Mr. Cantrell earned a bachelor's degree in public administration and finance from San Diego State University. "I got into health care because I was interested in it out of college," he says. He gained valuable experience through volunteer work, and with the support of his mentor Nancy Brown, transitioned to management roles. These experiences involved overseeing 17 departments, managing a $60 million budget and presenting financial reports to a board.

Mr. Cantrell's leadership has produced notable results, such as increasing Pioneer Medical Group's income by $1.2 million annually and growing its membership by 800%. Moreover, he reversed multimillion-dollar losses into profitability through financial restructuring and led MedEx Urgent Care to profitability within eight months of opening. "I do the negotiations with the health plans, the doctors and all that," he says. "Overall, it's about setting up organizations right from the beginning."

Currently, Mr. Cantrell is working with the government to establish a nonprofit medical care clinic in American Samoa. The facility will offer urgent care, immediate care and outpatient surgery with a focus on sustainability so the clinic can continue serving the community long after its launch.

Dedication to Community Service

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Cantrell has volunteered with the San Diego State University Aztec Mentor Program since 2016. He also sits on the advisory board for MeUGlobal, a cloud and mobile platform that aims to improve worldwide communication. His membership on the board of directors for the Los Alamitos Education Foundation and support for charities focused on health and children further underscore his commitment to community service.

Notably, Mr. Cantrell co-founded the Athletes for Life Foundation, which has tested more than 7,000 people nationwide for heart disease. Results show the condition is more pervasive than previously reported. In addition to holding a leadership position, he engages in the work directly by driving the mobile testing unit and training others.

Family Life and Patient-Centered Care

A father of two, Mr. Cantrell enjoys golf and collecting wine. As a former professional sailor, he participated in two America's Cup competitions. Additionally, he supports youth sports through his involvement with Beach Cities Youth Lacrosse.

As a top professional and entrepreneur, Mr. Cantrell remains committed to advancing health care access and focusing on patients rather than profits. "My whole career in health care has been about ensuring people get appropriate care," he says.
