This latest installment continues a memoir series recognized for its honesty, resilience, and insight into the making of a world-class surgeon.

Michael M. Meguid, M.D., longtime Marco Island resident and internationally recognized surgeon, has released Great Joys, Great Sorrows - An Immigrant’s Journey Through Surgical Residency, the fourth volume in his autobiographical series A Surgeon’s Tale.

The new book: [Great Joys Great Sorrows] takes readers inside Harvard’s surgical residency programs of the 1970s, a period marked by 110-hour workweeks, relentless discipline, and the high stakes of life-and-death decision-making. Through candid storytelling, Dr. Meguid explores both the triumphs and the hardships of becoming a surgeon while navigating the personal sacrifices and emotional toll of such an uncompromising profession. “Residency was a crucible,” said Dr. Meguid. “It tested not only my skill and endurance but also my sense of humanity. I want readers to understand both the exhilaration of saving lives and the sorrow of inevitable loss.

A Surgeon’s Journey

Born in Cairo, Dr. Meguid began recounting his life in Roots and Branches, which chronicled his childhood and early experiences. Subsequent volumes - Mastering the Knife and Surgeon and Lover - traced his search for belonging and professional identity. The A Surgeon’s Tale series has earned recognition from readers and literary festivals, with the first volume receiving Honorable Mentions at the 2021 New York Book Festival and the Hollywood Book Festival in the Biography category. With Great Joys, Great Sorrows, Dr. Meguid continues his exploration of perseverance, ambition, and the immigrant experience, illustrating how a once uncertain young man grew into a surgeon and scientist dedicated to advancing medicine and improving patient lives.
