Students Call for a Sober High School as Resilience Leadership Academy Opens with Dr. Tyra Hodge as Head of Schools

Announcing Dr. Tyra Hodge as Head of Schools at Resilience Leadership Academy

Liberty & Montgomery County, TX — August 18, 2025 — Responding directly to student calls for a drug-free educational environment, Resilience Leadership Academy officially opened its doors on August 18, offering a safe, structured, and supportive setting for learning.

The initiative emerged following a recent survey conducted among 150 students at the Liberty County Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP). The survey revealed that 96% of students disciplined for drug-related offenses expressed a desire to attend a school free from drugs, with access to rigorous academics and personal support.

Resilience Leadership Academy was established to meet this urgent demand. Leading the effort is Dr. Tyra Hodge, a veteran educator and social-emotional learning specialist, who has accepted the volunteer role of Head of Schools. To ensure immediate access for students, tuition is currently waived while the academy pursues formal accreditation. Dr. Hodge teaches evening classes and has personally underwritten advanced academic resources for the inaugural class.

“Although I cannot sustain this effort alone, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure these students have the opportunity they deserve,” said Dr. Hodge, who also serves as Assistant Director of Social Emotional Learning & Mental Health in her full-time professional role.

The academy is supported through partnerships with community organizations. Heaven’s Army, a nonprofit in Cleveland, Texas, is offering boarding school options for students requiring additional structure and support. In addition, Jesus Church in Conroe has partnered with the academy to provide classroom space for students seeking a traditional school-day format. The academy’s leadership is also exploring additional sites in high-need areas to expand its reach.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Hodge has announced plans to launch a K-8 classical school for low-income students by August 2026. The goal is to broaden access to quality education for families with limited financial means.

“Just because students don’t have a lot of money does not mean they should be denied a high-quality education,” Dr. Hodge emphasized.

Dr. Hodge’s work reflects decades of commitment to nonprofit service, often without compensation. She expressed hope that sustained support will eventually allow her to dedicate herself full-time to leading this new recovery high school.
