A recent study published in the Journal of Religion and Health showed that having a chaplain on staff can help improve psychological health in schools, as chaplains provide an outlet for educators and students to receive spiritual and emotional guidance during difficult times. The addition of an NSCA-certified chaplain to a school can offer significant benefits to schools. “Hiring a chaplain at your school directly impacts the lives of students, staff, educators, and communities through increased school safety, better teacher retention rates, and enhanced mental health support,” explains a spokesperson. “NSCA chaplains are available 24/7 for staff and students.”
With an emphasis on providing guidance for students that can help children and teens develop a greater sense of social responsibility and personal growth, school chaplains offer a nonjudgmental, confidential form of support that does not carry the stigma sometimes associated with therapy or counseling.
Chaplains are trained to take a tolerant, respectful, non-denominational approach that is accessible for students and educators from all different backgrounds. The NSCA course emphasizes chaplaincy work that is consistent with a voluntary, permission-based, secular workplace ministry.
Along with offering support and guidance to students, chaplains also assist school employees with hospital care, family and marriage issues, substance abuse situations, stress management, and interpersonal conflicts. NSCA chaplains are certified to enter all facilities, accident scenes, and emergency rooms.
The NSCA’s 5-point process facilitates an introduction between certified school chaplains and school teams to help build a professional relationship based on authenticity and trust. Chaplains are also subject to ongoing supervision from the NSCA’s Senior Chaplain Board, which administrates chaplains, facilitates relations, and acts as an arbitrator if necessary.
