The importance of oral health for children cannot be understated, with oral health and hygiene now linked to everything from certain cancers, to heart disease and diabetes.
This quarter, General and Cosmetic Dentistry of Tampa’s very own Dr. Michael Diez highlights a new program aimed at teaching youngsters about the importance of dental care.
Educating Youngsters About Dental Care: a fun and interesting approach to dental care for kids
Tampa native Dr. Michael Diez, known affectionately as ‘Dr. Mick’, takes great pride in giving back to the community that he both lives and works in. With each patient treated like family, Dr. Mick is committed to making a positive impact on the health and smiles of the patients he sees.
Teaching at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay, Dr. Mick makes learning about the importance of proper dental care interesting and fun. Meeting with children from kindergarten to fifth grade, Dr. Mick focuses on preventative techniques and teaching youngsters proper techniques for brushing, flossing, and more.
“We wanted to reach out to the community in some way, and as a dentist, I think the best thing we can do is educate the next generation on how to have good hygiene and avoid some of the serious problems we see on a day-to-day basis,” according to Diez.
The Boys and Girls Clubs hold a near and dear place in Diez’s heart. As a child, his grandfather on his father’s side used to tell stories about how the Boys and Girls Club kept him out of trouble and how the lessons he learned as a member shaped who he became today.
Dr. Mick Teamed up with NCAA Basketball Player Ricky Gallon
Tampa Legend, NCAA basketball star Ricky Gallon has been a leading role model for members of the Boys and Girls Club for years. His life experience, optimistic attitude, and compassion for today’s youth all lend to helping engage youngsters in ways that can have a considerable positive impact on their lives. When Dr. Mick first contacted the Boys and Girls Club he was directed to Mr. Gallon and the two hit it off from the start. Now, they are in their second year of working together and sharing a common goal – helping the children.
Taking Dental Education and Awareness on The Road
Currently, there are 20+ schools throughout the Tampa Bay area that are on the roster for Dr. Mick and the General and Cosmetic Dentistry of Tampa staff to attend in the coming months. These visits, previously featured in Fox 13 news, will feature demonstrations and education promoting good oral health and preventative techniques. As part of these efforts, General and Cosmetic Dentistry of Tampa will continue monthly donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and 2min sand timers to Boys and Girls Club members.
The Importance of Early Education and Intervention
Regular dental checkups and routine dental care is about more than showing off a pearly white smile. Proper dental care and daily oral routines are necessary for maintaining overall health and wellbeing.
However, despite the importance of regular dental care and treatment, many Americans are skipping them altogether, jeopardizing not only their smile, but increasing their risk of developing a wide range of conditions that could be both costly and dangerous.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, only around 61% of all adult Americans in the US have visited a dentist within the last 365 days, making early intervention and education of America’s youth a key tool for establishing healthy oral habits that follow them into adulthood.
