Pentagon Motor Group Releases Study Showing Used Car Buyers Traveling Further To Purchase in 2020 Despite COVID-19

North England-based dealer, Pentagon Motor Group, has released a study showing the changes in purchase habits from motorists. As such, it has discovered people are more likely, not less likely to travel for the car they want in 2020.

October 22, 2020 / /

Pentagon Group wanted to see if there were any changes to consumer behaviours due to the pandemic; specifically relating to distance travelled to purchase a used car in 2020. Using purchase data from August to September for both 2019 and 2020, Pentagon measured the distance car buyers were willing to travel YoY, segmenting by the vehicle manufacturer, gender and price.

The study found that used car buyers travelled an average of 43 minutes in 2019, compared to 59 minutes in 2020. Customers looking for “enthusiast” car brands are willing to travel up to 500% further than general brands, according to an analysis by Pentagon Group.

The study also found that car buyers looking for a used Alfa Romeo are willing to drive the furthest distance to make a purchase; 103 miles on average. However, those looking to purchase a used Ford are only willing to drive an average of 28 miles. Pentagon’s data suggests that men are more likely to travel further than women to purchase their next used vehicle too.

In 2019, men would be willing to drive an average of 31 miles to purchase their next used vehicle. This increased significantly in 2020, with men travelling an average of 42 miles. Meanwhile, women were travelling an average of 21 miles in 2019 to purchase their next used car. In 2020, they are driving an average of 33 miles to purchase a car; an additional 12 miles.

Pentagon analysed their purchase data from August to September for both 2019 and 2020, measuring the differing distances customers were travelling to purchase their next vehicle from a Pentagon showroom. Segmenting by gender, price and vehicle manufacturer.
