Dr. Kern Wildenthal Honored for Cardiovascular Research and Education

The International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences - North America Section honors Dr. Kern Wildenthal for his contributions in the field of cardiovascular medicine and research.

Dr. Kern Wildenthal of Dallas, Texas is no stranger to accolades, rewards and honors. Throughout his career he has received acclaim, including academic awards such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Eastwood Research Award, the Outstanding Teacher Award by the UT Southwestern student body, Masaryk University Memorial Medal, and several career development awards from the U.S. Public Health Service. He has also received honors such as the Virginia Chandler Dykes Award for Public Service from Texas Woman’s University, the TACA Silver Cup Award for Volunteer Leadership in the Arts, the Dallas Historical Society Award for Community Service, and the Spirit of Generations Award from the Senior Source of Dallas. Along with these recognitions he has also been awarded honorary Doctor of Science degrees by Southern Methodist University in 2006 and by Austin College in 2010. In 2008, he became the only leader of a non-profit organization to be elected to the Texas Business Hall of Fame.

His latest honor has been bestowed by the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences – North America Section. This distinguished organization has established two orations, one in honor of Dr. Kern Wildenthal and one in honor of Dr. Eric Olson. The “Kern Wildenthal Cardiovascular Orations in Clinical Medicine” will include talks from five clinician scientists, while the “Eric Olson Cardiovascular Orations in Biomedical Science” will present the work of five researchers. These presentations will take place during the annual Cardiovascular Forum this coming August.

Dr. Kern Wildenthal, who served as President of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center from 1986-2008 and as President of Southwestern Medical Foundation from 2008-2012, now is active as a consultant or member of the Board of Directors for several local and national research, business, and philanthropic organizations. He currently holds appointments as Southwestern Medical Foundation’s Senior Consultant, Board Director of the Hamon Charitable Trust, Executive Advisor for ScienceSeed LLP, Chairman of the Moncrief Cancer Foundation, and a member of the Board of Directors of Kronos Worldwide, Inc., among other positions.

Dr. Kern Wildenthal was the youngest dean of an American medical school when in 1980 he was named dean at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at age 38. After serving six years in this position he became the institution’s president for the next 22 years, from 1986 to 2008. Throughout his career, he has been recognized numerous times for his achievements in institutional administration, clinical medicine, education, biomedical research, and philanthropic leadership.
