DESCRIPTION:

Do you findย recycling confusing? If so, youโ€™re not alone! According to a 2020ย survey by OnePoll, one of the biggest barriers preventing people from recycling is a lack of understanding. Approximately 26% of survey respondents admitted they donโ€™t know what materials can and cannot be recycled.ย

Properย recycling educationย is important because it helps reduceย recycling contamination ratesย and ensure local recycling programs remain sustainable for future generations. Republic Services believes that recycling should be as simple as one, two, three, and weโ€™re here to make the process accessible for everyone. Thatโ€™s why we are helping you take the guesswork out of recycling.ย

ย Approximately 26% of survey respondents admitted that they donโ€™t know what materials can and cannot be recycled.

Ahead ofย Earth Day, weโ€™re going back toย recycling basicsย with three key lessons fromย Recycling Simplified. By following the below guidelines, youโ€™ll be a recycling pro in no time!ย

  1. Remember to keep recyclables unbagged.ย Bagging or boxing up your recyclables is not necessary. Sorters at the recycling facility are unable to filter through whatโ€™s in the bag, so the whole thing could wind up in the landfill.ย Recyclables should be left looseย when placed in your bin.
  2. Keep recyclablesย empty, clean, and dry.ย Dirty or wet recyclables can contaminate the entire bin. Remember that only clean, dryย paperย andย cardboardย can be recycled. You donโ€™t need to scrub items downโ€”just rinse and shake them dry. You should rinse out and dryย glass,ย aluminum, orย plasticย containers before tossing them in your bin. ย
  3. Know what to throw.ย Flattened cardboard, paper,ย plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum cans, andย glassย (depending on the area) are all recyclable. Also, remember that certain items can never be recycled. Common ones are diapers (clean or dirty!),ย yard waste, andย plastic bags. These things should always be thrown away, or in the case of plastic bags, repurposed if possible. Before you throw an un-recyclable item in the trash, consider if it could be reused or donated. Also, remember thatย hazardous materialsย need to be disposed of with special care.ย

You can become a better recycler just by keeping these three rules in mind every day! Make sure you understand the basics and visitย recyclingsimplified.comย for more information.ย
