There isย lots to do to getย toย kidsย ready to goย back to school this year.ย No matter what model of instruction your school is following, device time for every ageย groupย is at anย all-timeย high (New York Times, 2021), making it more important than ever to ensure your kids understand digital safety.ย ย

A new school year and a new teacher likely means your kids will be making new accounts in apps and programsย โ€“ย a prime time for hackers to steal personal information. Depending on your childโ€™s age, they might be facing new challenges on social media asย well, likeย cyberbullying and sexting,ย behaviors they might not even identify as dangerous or inappropriate.ย ย

NortonLifeLock is the Founding and Presenting sponsorย ofย National PTAโ€™sย PTA Connected, whichย partnersย withย caregiversย and families to help keep kids safeย andย empower them on the internet.ย PTA Connectedย is an online space that connectsย parents and caregiversย to programs,ย resources, and toolsย around the topic of digital parenting.ย

Digital safety doesnโ€™t have to be complicated. Here are three easy things you can do today to get your kids readyย to goย back to school:ย

  1. Turn on automatic updates for all apps and programs on your childrenโ€™s devices.ย If youโ€™re looking for quick and easy ways to increaseย Cyberย Safety, look no further! Simply turn on automatic updates on laptops, tablets, and smartphones so that malware and viruses are instantly blocked. Malware lets hackers infectย devices and this one simple step will keep the majority of hackers at bay.ย

  2. Set up lock screens on phones and tablets.ย This is especially true for older children who might have devices in public places. Phones contain a lot of personal information and, without a lock screen, provide criminals with easy access to this data. A lock screen wonโ€™t stop every criminal, butย willย increase the odds of being protected.ย ย

  3. Try theย Smart Talkย with your familyย to prepare for theย schoolย year.ย The Smart Talk is a free, fun tool designed to initiate conversations between children and their parents about digital safety. After a series of guided questions, participants are provided with a contract that they can print, sign, and hangย upย so that everyone remembers the agreed-upon rules.ย

Want more digital safety tips?ย NortonLifeLock andย National PTAย held aย โ€œBack to Schoolโ€ Facebook Liveย yesterday. National PTA President Anna Kingย joinedย Kevin Alejandro Roundy, Senior Technical Director at Norton Labs, and me. We presentedย additional Cyber Safety tipsย to families navigating the new school year.ย
