Japan’s Matcha Industry Confronts Climate-Driven Crisis

As global demand grows, driven by rising interest from international consumers, Japan’s tencha production has been affected by this year’s extreme heat, resulting in reduced yields and quality. With demand increasing faster than supply can keep up, matcha prices have reached their highest level in 20 years.

SEATTLE, WA (MERXWIRE) – Matcha has raced through the global beverage market in recent years. From speciality cafes to bubble-tea chains, the distinctive green swirl at the bottom of a cup has become a new symbol of urban taste. Whether whisked into a smooth drink or dusted atop a dessert, matcha has come to represent both comfort and lifestyle aesthetics. Yet just as its popularity reaches new heights, the supply chain behind it is quietly flashing warning signs.

The primary source of high-quality matcha has been struck by record-breaking heat this year. Tea plantations suffered intense sunlight during the critical spring and summer growing seasons. Tender young leaves grew unevenly, becoming thinner and yellowish, significantly lowering the quality of tencha, the tea leaves used to produce matcha. Some regions reported a 20–30% drop in harvest volume, causing an immediate contraction in overall supply. As a result, tencha auction prices surged to 8,235 yen per kilogram, the highest level ever recorded.

Despite these challenges, global enthusiasm for matcha remains unshaken. Its appeal extends beyond its vibrant colour; matcha’s health-forward image is supported by its nutritional makeup. Because matcha is made from grinding whole tea leaves, polyphenols, catechins, chlorophyll, and L-theanine are fully preserved. Polyphenols provide antioxidant benefits, while L-theanine combined with moderate caffeine delivers a smoother, calmer sense of alertness—key reasons matcha has become a leading choice among consumers seeking healthier alternatives to coffee.

Matcha production is complex and sensitive, requiring controlled shading, stable sunlight conditions, and precise harvest timing. Any shift in the weather directly affects both yield and flavour. This year’s heat events placed extreme stress on tea plants during their most crucial growth phase, making it difficult for leaves to retain the freshness and sweetness essential to premium matcha. As climate impacts intensify year after year, the uncertainty surrounding matcha supply continues to grow. Even if plantations expand, it will take years before new fields can compensate for current losses.

Under rising prices and tightening supply, the market has begun to shift. Alternatives such as hojicha, genmaicha, barley tea, and herbal infusions are gaining prominence on beverage menus. These drinks are less susceptible to climate conditions, offer more stable pricing, and provide distinct flavours. While they cannot fully replicate matcha’s deep umami and signature green character, they serve as reliable substitutes during periods of limited matcha availability.

Once a traditional tea, matcha has evolved into a global cultural symbol and a hallmark of the wellness movement. Today’s supply crisis is a reminder that natural ingredients are inseparable from environmental conditions. As climate change becomes increasingly tangible, even an everyday beverage can be disrupted. Finding a sustainable balance among quality, environmental impact, and market demand will be the key challenge facing the global matcha industry in the coming years.
