FROELICK GALLERY presents Shorelines, a solo exhibition of ten brand new paintings by Portland artist Gwen Davidson. The paintings were inspired by her time on the Oregon Coast.
Davidson wrote about this series:
“Work on these paintings began after I spent time on the Oregon coast last fall. I wanted to return to those days and keep those places around me as winter arrived in Portland.
This has not been an intellectual pursuit. It is the memory of sensory experience, space spreading out and motion all around. The paintings reflect general impressions of moving air and water, rock masses, seasonal color. I remember tracing the line of water vapor in the sky, water trails out in the ocean, and rainwater draining through the rocks at my feet, but these were not scientific connections.
The paintings are not photographic. I am not describing what I know or have studied. My landscape photos seldom match what I see. Photos are still, often appear airless and tend to flatten space. What I remember is the “aliveness.” I want that movement of air and water to guide my hand. What is the nature of this place? Can I get that into a painting?”
Davidson joined Froelick Gallery in 1997. Her paintings are in public and private collections including The Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX; the City of Portland, OR, the City of Seattle, WA, and Nordstrom, Inc. She holds an M.F.A in Painting from Portland State University, OR, and a B.F.A. in Painting from Drake University, Des Moines, IA.
