Imported Glass Baby Bottles Recalled Due to Lead Exposure Risks

By: WebWire
September 19, 2022 at 09:21 AM EDT

Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada announced a joint recall of imported glass baby bottles due to elevated levels of lead on the product. CPSC states that markings on the outside of the bottles contain levels of lead that exceeds the federal lead content ban and Health Canada reports the lead in excess of the allowable limit established by the Consumer Products Containing Lead Regulations.

The baby bottles were manufactured in Germany and meant for the UK market. Some of the bottles made it to the U.S. and Canada through online sales. The product was sold in both countries from January of 2018 until May of this year in the United States and until July in Canada.

Lead is toxic if ingested and can cause a wide variety of adverse health issues. This is especially true for young children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even states that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified.

“The United States and Canada both have product regulations designed to protect children from lead and other heavy metal exposure risks,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “There have been a number of recalls of products designed for children recently, mainly from imported products with levels of lead or other heavy metals above allowable limits.”

Helping companies that manufacture, import, distribute and retail products from putting consumers at risk, and the high costs associated with product recalls, are the consumer product testing experts at EMSL Analytical. EMSL has laboratories across the United States and Canada that offer product, material and surface testing services for lead and many other regulated substances.
