Revolutionizing Neuropathy Treatment: Dr. Alan Shih Offers Advanced Care Helping to Relieve Neuropathy Symptoms in Southern Arizona

TUCSON, AZ / ACCESSWIRE / January 24, 2023 / Neuropathy is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people, causing pain, burning, weakness, numbness, and a general loss of sensation. These symptoms can greatly limit a person's ability to carry out daily tasks and certainly lead to a substantially reduced quality of life. Numbness can lead to poor balance and increased fall risk, along with poor sleep and general irritability. For those living with neuropathy, it can feel like there is no hope for improvement. Many have sought neuropathy treatment from various doctors, only to be told there is nothing that can be done.

But Dr. Alan Shih, a board-certified podiatrist at the Tucson Neuropathy Institute, a subdivision of Head to Toe Healthcare, PLC, is changing that narrative for neuropathy patients. More than 20 million people in the United States are estimated to have some form of peripheral neuropathy. He is a beacon of hope for those suffering from neuropathy through his dedication to advanced care and the use of cutting-edge techniques. Dr. Shih takes a more comprehensive approach to treating neuropathy of the legs and feet, providing personalized treatment plans that alleviate symptoms and improve overall quality of life.

Dr. Alan Shih is a highly qualified and experienced podiatrist who is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by neuropathy. From a young age, he was fascinated with helping people walk and live better, and his passion led him to earn a Bachelor of Science in Movement Science from the University of Michigan. After completing his studies at the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, he completed 4 years of residency training with a heavy surgical focus, culminating at a level one Trauma Center, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. After residency training, he was a visiting lecturer at Rosalind Franklin Medical School, teaching surgical techniques.

Before moving west to Arizona, he had the unique opportunity of a mini-surgical fellowship in Russia, studying the Ilizarov technique, which less than 1% of podiatrists receive. Dr. Shih has extensive training to treat various foot and ankle conditions. However, despite his extensive formal training, he didn't learn much about nerves during his 4+ years of postgraduate training. Generally speaking, even highly trained doctors do not learn much about nerves and peripheral neuropathy, except for the general message that nothing can really be done to help neuropathy.

Following Dr. Shih's move to Arizona and starting up in private practice, he had the very good fortune to receive some mentorship from Dr. Richard Jacoby, a leading nerve surgeon and author of the book Sugar Crush. While Dr. Jacoby has performed hundreds of bunion surgeries and more prototypical podiatry procedures, mid-career he shifted his focus to nerves and introduced Dr. Shih to the world of peripheral nerves, which was largely pioneered by Dr. Dellon, arguably the world's foremost authority on peripheral nerve surgery.

Dr. Shih's training was further enhanced by his association with Dr. Dellon at the Dellon Institute for Peripheral Nerve Surgery, an affiliate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Dellon's guidance helped Dr. Shih gain a deep understanding of peripheral nerves, which need loupe magnification of typically 3.5x to be seen. This is a large reason why most surgeons and doctors don't have an appreciation for these peripheral nerves. Understanding the surgical anatomy of peripheral nerves opens up a whole new world for being able to treat neuropathy.

The general public understands nerve compression at the wrist, called carpal tunnel syndrome, which can lead to numbness, tingling, burning, pain, and weakness. The same compression of nerves can happen in the legs and feet. Dr. Dellon, a world renowned hand surgeon, made the correlation between the legs and feet, where nerves typically get pinched. Dr. Dellon explains that most doctors can't treat nerve pain simply because they don't know the surgical anatomy of nerves.

"My passion is the life-changing impact advanced neuropathy treatment can have on patients. Dr. Dellon taught me to shift my focus from individual tendons and bones to identifying the root causes of pain and treating peripheral nerves, which led me to specialize in this field. My goal is to educate the public that there is hope for neuropathy patients and that, with personalized treatment, they can live pain-free or with minimal pain."

"For far too long, people have suffered from the debilitating pain of neuropathy with the belief that there is little that can be done to treat it. But advancements in medical science have changed the game. With new techniques and a deeper understanding of nerve anatomy and their functions, we can now provide effective treatment options for neuropathy patients. People often assume that neuropathy is only linked to diabetes, but the truth is that there are countless causes. Don't let yourself or a loved one suffer needlessly, there is hope and treatment available," says Dr. Alan Shih.
