Breakthrough in China’s nuclear power “core”: the first 0.45 μm aramid filter element enters engineering application

The first nanoscale aramid filter cartridge for nuclear power in China has entered the engineering application verification stage.

The "Research and Development Project of Water Filter Cartridge for Primary Loop and Auxiliary System of Nuclear Power Plant" led by Qinshan Nuclear Power, a subsidiary of China Nuclear Power, has completed the online trial of 1 μm filter cartridge for Qinyi Plant, 5 μm filter cartridge for Qin-3 Plant, and some systems for Qin-2 Plant. The independently developed nano aramid filter cartridge with an accuracy of up to 0.45 μm has been officially put into use in the cooling treatment system of the reactor refueling pool and spent fuel pool at Qin-2 Plant, marking the first nano aramid filter cartridge in China's nuclear power plant entering the engineering application verification stage.

As a new type of nuclear grade filter material, aramid filter material has excellent properties such as high temperature resistance, radiation resistance, high strength, good chemical adaptability, and low impurity precipitation. Its organic material characteristics contribute to the minimization of radioactive waste treatment.

The 0.45 μm aramid filter developed this time has an accuracy equivalent to one percent of the diameter of a human hair. The R&D team started with material modification and overcame key technologies such as surface functionalization of aramid fibers and directional arrangement of nanoscale fibers. At the molecular chain level, a multidimensional network structure was constructed, effectively solving the problem of uneven pore size distribution in traditional processes and achieving the high-performance goal of filtration efficiency greater than 99.5%.

The successful application of this filter element not only achieved independent technological breakthroughs in high-precision nuclear grade filter materials, but also solved the problems of silicon precipitation in traditional fiberglass filter materials and short service life of wood pulp paper filter materials.

The project is led by Qinshan Nuclear Power and jointly promoted by Zhejiang University, China Institute of Radiation Protection, Zhuhai Feibo Filter Materials Co., Ltd., and other units. It has built a deep integration model of "organized scientific research+organized achievement transformation" between industry, academia, and research, achieving independent and controllable control of the entire process from filter material formulation, filter paper production to filter cartridge performance evaluation.
