Titanium Dioxide Surface Treatment: Why the Invisible “Coating” Matters

Although titanium dioxide particles are tiny, they are "dressed" in a carefully designed "coat"—the surface treatment layer. This invisible coating plays a decisive role in the application performance of coating titanium dioxide.

Common surface treatment materials include oxides of silicon, aluminum, and zirconium, as well as various organic treating agents. Inorganic treatment layers primarily provide titanium dioxide with weather resistance, chemical stability, and dispersibility. For example, dense silica coating effectively isolates titanium dioxide from direct contact with the resin matrix, reducing photocatalytic activity and significantly improving weather resistance. Aluminum treatment helps improve the dispersion performance of titanium dioxide in different systems.

Organic treatment layers typically serve as the "outermost coat," mainly used to adjust the surface energy of titanium dioxide, making it more compatible with various resin systems. Organically treated grades allow for faster and more uniform dispersion in applications such as titanium dioxide paint and titanium dioxide in plastics, effectively reducing agglomeration and improving production efficiency.

Different applications have varying requirements for surface treatment. High-weather-resistance outdoor coatings require dense inorganic coating; products with high gloss requirements need smoother surface treatment; and water-based versus solvent-based systems have different preferences for organic treating agents. For this reason, surface treatment technology has become an important component of the core competitiveness of titanium dioxide companies.

An R&D engineer at Asia Pacific Chemical explains, "We have designed multiple surface treatment solutions based on different application requirements. Just like matching different clothes for different occasions, our goal is to ensure titanium dioxide is 'dressed' appropriately and performs excellently in any application environment."
