Marquis Who's Who Honors Philip A. Spanninger, PhD, as Top Industry Leader

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / September 9, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who honors Philip A. Spanninger, PhD, as a top industry leader in the field of consulting. Having once distinguished himself during a remarkable career in organic chemistry, from which he retired as the executive vice president of Americhem, Dr. Spanninger now dedicates his time to advising and counseling people whose relatives have Alzheimer's disease.

About Dr. Philip A. Spanninger

Dr. Spanninger earned a bachelor's and master's degree in chemistry, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy from Clemson University in South Carolina. Following his doctoral studies, he performed postdoctoral research in organic chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin from 1970 to 1973.

During his academic career, Dr. Spanninger won a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant and conducted research at the University of Texas, where he collaborated with Dr. Michael Dewar, one of the top chemists in the country. He also received an academic award from the Senior Society at Philadelphia University.

"I set up a scholarship fund under my fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, for worthy students who are giving back to their community and have the grades and so forth. That's been going on for quite a while and my fraternity brothers have also donated to it. It's been going on for 15 years. The base amount of the fund now is close to $200,000 and it's growing over time," Dr. Spanninger says of the fund he set up for Thomas Jefferson University.

Career Achievements

Dr. Spanninger's area of expertise is organic chemistry. During a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, he created new businesses for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., GenCorp and TRW. His international business acumen was particularly evident when he served as vice president of Asia Pacific at TRW, where he oversaw 29 companies. His career trajectory included 15 years with Goodyear, nine years with GenCrop and five years with TRW before joining Americhem International, where he spent nearly five years before retiring in 2008.

Dr. Spanninger founded and ran his own consulting firm for 18 years, starting in the early 90s before closing it in 2013. Following this, he transferred his clients to a friend's firm.

Personal Life and Legacy

Throughout his career, his wife, Janet Eileen, was a source of unwavering support, encouraging him to pursue his graduate studies and PhD. Dr. Spanninger credits her as being instrumental in his academic and professional success. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in December 2012 and lived for a remarkable 12 years after her diagnosis. The couple's marriage lasted 61 years until her passing.

Despite being retired, Dr. Spanninger continues to keep abreast of the latest developments in Alzheimer's research. "There have been a lot of drugs now, especially ones that don't heal or get rid of it, but significantly delay the onset," Dr. Spanninger explains.

Dr. Spanninger is a donor to the BrightFocus Foundation, which focuses on finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. He also volunteers with local Alzheimer's groups, providing support to other families facing the disease.

Advocating for Those with Alzheimer's Disease

Dr. Spanninger's advice for those dealing with family members who have Alzheimer's is both practical and compassionate. To families facing a diagnosis, he suggests remaining as understanding as possible, taking the time to educate themselves about the disease and getting involved in a peer or support group, as he does. This will help them better understand the progression of the disease and learn what can be truly helpful to patients.

"When it's a spouse or someone with Alzheimer's close to you, you need patience. The worst thing you can do is respond negatively or angrily to what you're hearing, so it's important to stay calm," Dr. Spanninger says.

Through his professional accomplishments, philanthropic efforts and advocacy for Alzheimer's families, Dr. Spanninger continues to make a meaningful impact long after his retirement.
