National Tune-Up Day Reminds Homeowners to Maintain an All Important Whole-Home System

A Pre-season Heating System Maintenance Tune-Up Improves Performance, Safety, Saves Money

National Tune-Up Day, September 25, reminds homeowners to have professionals perform needed maintenance on their heating system to ensure their comfort and safety before the fall and winter heating seasons hit.

During a heating system tune-up, which takes about an hour, professional heating technicians typically run through a checklist that includes, depending upon the type of system, an inspection of safety systems and controls, thermostats, burners, pilot, gauge and low water cut-off, filters and belts, flue pipe and chimney draft, motors and pumps, blower assembly, condensate line and more.

“Supply chain issues, inflation and the skilled labor gap mean that having an HVAC repair is more expensive than ever,” explained Tom Rusin, HomeServe North America CEO. “Waiting for a part to come in or for a contractor’s schedule to clear when you don’t have heat in your home is an inconvenience that could be avoided in many cases with a pre-scheduled tune-up visit to ensure the home heating system is ready for winter’s cold weather.”

The State of the American Home survey found that heating and air conditioning systems are the home system most likely to break down with 28% of homeowners reporting a repair in the past 12 months. In additional LinkedIn polling, 21% of homeowners said they’ve never had these systems tuned-up and 18% said they have never changed their system filter.

Not maintaining a heating system can be dangerous. For example, a blocked flue or exhaust vent could potentially expose homeowners to carbon monoxide. The Centers for Disease Control recommend a combination of annual tune-ups and carbon monoxide detectors to avoid accidental exposure.

A well-maintained heating system will save homeowners money both to operate the system and in avoidable repair costs. Neglecting maintenance can cause a system to work harder, adding up to 30% to a household’s annual energy bill.

The cost of a gas boiler or furnace tune-up averages $150, while having to have an actual repair completed comes in at a much higher average of $450, according to HomeServe data. This repair data, coupled with the fact that nearly a third of Americans report having only $500 or less or even no money at all set aside for a home emergency, shows why a tune-up makes smart financial sense.

Now is the time to schedule a tune-up to prevent a heating system breakdown during what the Farmer’s Almanac predicts will be a seasonably cold to colder-than-normal winter with above average snowfall.
