CarInsurance.com Report Reveals Stark Car Insurance Rate Gaps Between U.S. Cities

Premiums vary by more than $3,000 annually, depending on the city

CarInsurance.com, a leading online resource for auto insurance education and comparisons, today released its analysis of car insurance premiums across U.S. cities, revealing dramatic cost differences between neighboring municipalities and states.

The report, "The Most Expensive Cities for Car Insurance in 2025 (and the Cheapest)," highlights how factors such as population density, traffic risk, crime, weather, and local laws contribute to premiums that can vary by more than $3,000 annually between nearby cities.

Key findings include:

  • Detroit and New Orleans are the most expensive cities: Michigan and Louisiana dominate the top list for the highest annual premiums.
  • Vermont is the most affordable state: Low traffic density, low crime, and a tort insurance system keep Vermont cities among the cheapest in the nation.
  • Nearby cities show wide gaps: Brooklyn, NY, drivers pay $3,012 more per year than those in Jersey City, N.J., despite being only a few miles apart.
  • Insurance deserts are rising: Climate risks and high-claim areas drive some insurers to raise rates sharply or exit markets altogether.

“Car insurance rates aren’t just about your driving history — your ZIP code plays a major role,” said Laura Longero, executive editor of CarInsurance.com. “Our research shows that location-based risk factors, such as crime rates, congestion, and even local laws, can have a bigger impact on premiums than many drivers realize.”

The report also identifies the top 25 most expensive and cheapest U.S. cities for car insurance in 2025 and the 10 cities where insurance costs increased the most in the past two years.

Longero is available to discuss the report on the most expensive and cheapest cities.
