HIMSS25 Survey Highlights - Performant Healthcare

Survey Key Findings:

  • 61.5% of respondents indicated their top priority for healthcare technology was improving patient outcomes, followed by enhancing operational efficiency (56.8%) and adopting innovative, cutting-edge solutions (55.4%).
  • 77.0% of respondents indicated AI and machine learning, followed by EHR and interoperability (35.1%), are expected to have the greatest impact on healthcare over the next five years.
  • Key factors in selecting healthcare technology vendors include product reliability, strong customer support, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.

These results highlight a healthcare sector in transformation, one that is prioritizing innovation and outcomes while balancing pressure to reduce waste and maximize impact.

A System Under Strain: The Urgency Behind the Data

The survey results come at a time when the broader healthcare system is under unprecedented scrutiny. According to a recent U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, in FY 2024, 16 federal agencies identified $162 billion in improper payments across 68 programs, more than 50% of which were in healthcare. This does not include payments classified as fraud.

“The size and scope of this problem is staggering,” said Simeon Kohl, CEO of Performant. “While healthcare leaders at HIMSS are focused on innovation and efficiency, the reality is that fraud, waste and abuse has caused hundreds of billions of dollars of waste that could otherwise support patient care, health equity and long-term system resilience.”

Technology as a Defense Against Financial Waste

With a proven track record of uncovering more than $1.3 billion in savings for the Medicare trust fund during the past three years, Performant plays a critical role in protecting healthcare funding at scale. “The survey confirms what we’re seeing in the market: healthcare organizations are prioritizing technology that drives meaningful, measurable, quality results,” added Christian Bass, SVP, Payment Integrity.

Grant Kordash, SVP, Technology, added, “By identifying patterns and trends within large data sets, AI and machine learning can help optimize payment processes, reduce errors and enhance overall efficiency. As we look to the future, leveraging AI and machine learning will be core to our strategy centered on innovation and client results.”

What’s Next: Shaping a More Resilient Future

As the healthcare industry continues to digitize and evolve, Performant is committed to equipping payers, providers and government agencies with the tools needed to safeguard every dollar. “Innovation isn’t just about the next big thing, it’s about solving big problems,” said Amanda Purvis, SVP, Product Innovation. “By combining powerful data analytics, AI-driven workflows and decades of expertise, we’re helping clients tackle the very real financial inefficiencies plaguing the U.S. healthcare system. That’s the future we’re building.”
