University of Phoenix and Non Commissioned Officers Association Announce Winner of Inaugural Full-Tuition Scholarship

Recipient is U.S. Navy Veteran Sherwin E. Gloston

Together with the Non Commissioned Officers Association (NCOA), University of Phoenix is proud to announce Sherwin E. Gloston, a U.S. Navy veteran who served as petty officer third class, as the recipient of the inaugural full-tuition scholarship for a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree program. The scholarship, established in collaboration with NCOA, reflects a shared commitment to supporting adult learners and military service members.

"I am honored to be chosen as this year's NCOA scholarship recipient," Gloston shares. "I chose University of Phoenix because, as a working family man, I needed a program designed to support adult learners who are balancing multiple responsibilities. The university’s flexible offerings align perfectly with my lifestyle." With the scholarship, Gloston is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business with a certificate in Operations Management, a goal he set for himself while serving in the military.

“It’s a privilege to support the educational journeys of our military community, and we take that responsibility seriously at University of Phoenix,” says Dr. Scott Myers, Campus and Academic Director. “This scholarship reflects our commitment to helping veterans like Mr. Gloston leverage their dedication and experience toward achieving their academic and professional goals.”

Military members and families may encounter challenges of time, commitments, and circumstances while pursuing a college degree. The University of Phoenix Non Commissioned Officers Association scholarship is intended to recognize military service commitment and provide a meaningful opportunity to further education goals for service members. In addition, the award highlights the resilience of veterans.

"This scholarship from University of Phoenix represents more than financial support; it’s a powerful affirmation of our veterans’ potential and a meaningful step toward helping them achieve their educational aspirations,” said NCOA Executive Director Joseph Terry. “For many, the cost of education is a significant barrier, and this generous contribution helps remove that obstacle entirely—opening doors to new opportunities and personal growth.”

As a certified Arizona Veteran Supportive Campus, University of Phoenix meets Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services C.A.R.E. criteria that demonstrate its commitment to providing support to student veterans, and veteran faculty and staff, for a positive and successful education experience. The C.A.R.E. criteria are: Connect to the Culture, Ask the Right Questions, Respond Effectively, and Engage in Military/Veteran Community.

Gloston shares he is looking forward to continuing his education with the support of the scholarship. “Completing this degree represents the fulfillment of a mission I began long ago—proof that while goals may be delayed, they are never denied when you persevere through life’s challenges,” he says. “I believe my journey serves as an inspiration to my children, my wife, and my friends by showing that a college education holds lasting value. It demonstrates that no matter how successful you’ve been or how many challenges life presents, it’s never too late to reinvent yourself and pursue your goals with purpose and determination.”
