University of Phoenix Alumni Chapters United Initiative Engages Thousands in Nationwide Volunteer Service

Alumni chapters across the country led community-focused volunteer projects, contributing more than 500 hours and reaching over 21,000 individuals

University of Phoenix proudly celebrates the success of its annual Alumni Chapters United initiative, a nationwide volunteer effort that brought together alumni chapters to serve their communities with purpose and pride. For this year’s event, alumni contributed more than 500 volunteer hours and reached over 21,000 individuals through chapter-led service projects across the country.

Seventeen alumni chapters participated in the initiative, each selecting a nonprofit or cause aligned with local needs. Projects included back-to-school supply drives for students, distributing wellness kits to those living in temporary shelters, coordinating food drives, and hosting a self-care day for women living in shelters, reflecting the many ways alumni chose to give back. The initiative captured the energy, determination and spirit of University of Phoenix alumni, sparking a movement they were proud to champion in their communities.

“Alumni Chapters United is more than a volunteer effort. It reflects the energy and compassion our alumni bring to their communities,” said Senior Manager of Alumni Marketing at University of Phoenix, Meg Shy. “Their commitment to service and ability to lead with impact were evident across chapters and projects. That spirit of showing up with heart and purpose is what makes our alumni so powerful.”

Alumni chapter leaders shared how the experience deepened their desire to serve. “We all left with full hearts, big smiles, and a renewed sense of purpose,” said Executive Vice President of the Raleigh Alumni Chapter, Opici Becton-Richmond. “Many of us felt this was a call to keep serving. The joy we felt that day will fuel our continued commitment to giving back. Community is the key to progress. When we unite around a shared purpose, we shine a light on what matters and share our gifts so everyone can thrive and be great.”

For others, the impact was felt in quieter moments. “What touched me the most was realizing the ripple effect of our service,” said Janice DaCosta, Charlotte Alumni Chapter President, whose chapter worked on preparing care packages for new parents. “Packing diapers is simple, but it eases a parent's worry and allows a child to be cared for with dignity. Even brief hours of volunteer work can restore hope in ways we never see but are deeply felt by the families we serve.”

The Alumni Chapters United initiative reflects the University’s broader mission to empower alumni as leaders and changemakers in their communities. Through meaningful service and local engagement, alumni continue to build lasting connections and demonstrate the values they carried as students.
