TileChalk by DBL Ceramics Turns Tile Waste into Classroom Chalk

By: Get News

Tile manufacturing is often seen as resource-intensive, but DBL Ceramics is proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. With the launch of its TileChalk initiative, the company has transformed residue sludge — a byproduct of tile manufacturing — into something meaningful: classroom chalk for underserved schools across Bangladesh.

For years, DBL Ceramics has operated with a strong sustainability ethos. From water treatment plants that recycle 100% of wastewater to near zero-waste manufacturing, the company has consistently sought ways to reduce its environmental footprint. During water recycling at its ceramics plant, DBL discovered that a unique form of residue sludge remained — one that could not be safely discharged into landfills without risking soil and water contamination.

Instead of discarding it, DBL saw an opportunity. After six months of research and collaboration with chalk manufacturers, the residue sludge was re-engineered into high-quality chalk sticks that are safe, durable, and affordable to produce.

The first batches of TileChalk were distributed through partner NGOs, reaching over 100 underserved schools across Bangladesh and providing thousands of students with eco-friendly learning tools. Alongside the chalk, DBL also repurposed broken tiles into lightweight classroom slates — reviving a sustainable educational practice from the past. Together, these efforts reduce industrial waste while making education more sustainable — a rare win for both industry and environment.

“Education should never harm the environment,” said a DBL Ceramics spokesperson. “With TileChalk, we’ve turned waste into a resource that helps children learn while protecting the planet.”

To scale the impact, DBL made the formula for TileChalk open-source and sent letters to industry peers encouraging them to adopt similar practices. The company also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with local chalk manufacturers, providing them with raw material free of charge to help revive the struggling chalk industry.

TileChalk has already captured attention across schools, NGOs, and media circles, demonstrating how sustainability and social good can co-exist in powerful ways. By giving new purpose to tile waste, DBL Ceramics is not just shaping tiles — it’s shaping a greener, smarter future for education in Bangladesh.
