Psychologist Robert Lutz takes readers from the Forces Choices Affecting Lifes Unfolding, to the 10 Keys to Successful Aging

San Francisco, CA - 09-09-2025 - In Start to Finish: A Life Well-Lived, Dr. Lutz invites readers to explore the choices and forces that shape our lives with compassion and honesty. He doesn’t shy away from the realities of life and explains how factors outside our control, including the family and societal circumstances we’re born into, play a fundamental role in how life unfolds.

“Some children get all the opportunities, help and support they need to succeed in school and in life. Others with similar hopes and needs aren’t so lucky”.

He notes that the pursuit of a good, full and healthy life doesn’t rest on a level playing field, making our choices and efforts all the more important. Lutz provides concrete steps we can take to develop a more positive outlook, effective communication styles, deeper relationships, a healthier lifestyle, and reduce self-defeating behaviors.

In Start to Finish, Lutz reviews the dramatic variability in how people age. He notes that in times past, people died younger on average and most often from infectious disease. Not anymore, he notes, not since breakthroughs in antibiotics and vaccines. Unlike in centuries past, Lutz notes that the common causes of death and disability are now degenerative diseases that are heavily influenced by lifestyle.

"We no longer die primarily from infections like past generations," says Lutz. "Today, we're living longer, but not always better. Our lifestyle choices compound over time and are the primary determinant for how we age”.

Providing insights into how genetics and lifestyle interact to affect health, Lutz provides concrete steps to stay healthy and fulfilled through old age. He offers Ten Keys to not just living longer, but more fully. Noting that at the heart of successful aging, is quality of life… not just longevity.

In his final chapter on End-of-Life, Dr. Lutz offers personal experiences and opinions on the complexities and sometimes grim realities of end-of-life care. Revealing his own strong family history of Alzheimer’s Disease, he offers his views on the inherent shortcomings in our long-term care options, and what should change. He argues that people deserve greater personal choice, and proposes a way that advance medical directives can and should be broadened. With compassion and blunt assessment, Lutz doesn’t hold back.
