Trazodone For Insomnia: Guide To Potential Side Effects & Alternatives Released

According to a survey commissioned by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, chronic insomnia affects a significant portion of the population, with an average of one in ten Americans being diagnosed with the condition in 2024. Insomnia and other sleeping issues have many causes, but these conditions are commonly treated with sleep aids - medications that induce drowsiness through various mechanisms.

Trazodone is a well-known antidepressant that is often prescribed as an off-label sleep aid for insomnia. Mission Connection’s guide says that the drug works by inhibiting the reabsorption of serotonin, prolonging its mood-regulating effects on the brain and its stabilizing effects on the sleep-wake cycle; it also blocks 5-HT2A receptors, H1 histamine receptors, and alpha-1 receptors, quelling alertness and calming the user.

While there are side effects associated with trazodone, Mission Connection’s team notes that they are mild and mostly include dizziness, headaches, and sustained sleepiness; however, overdosing can result in serotonin syndrome and cardiac arrhythmias, both of which can be life-threatening.

In these cases, the guide recommends nonmedical approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, which is effective at identifying thoughts and behaviors that may be contributing to insomnia.
