Religious Leaders in Gqeberha Unite to Empower Communities with Practical Tools for Life

In response to escalating social challenges in Nelson Mandela Bay, religious leaders from across Gqeberha came together to complete a life skills training programme aimed at equipping them to better assist their communities.

-- In response to escalating social challenges in Nelson Mandela Bay, religious leaders from across Gqeberha came together to complete a life skills training programme aimed at equipping them to better assist their communities. The Tools for Life graduation ceremony was held on Friday at the Church of Scientology of the Eastern Cape, marking a significant moment of interfaith cooperation in the city.

The event brought together church leaders from Methodist congregations in Zwide, New Reformed Churches in Motherwell, and other faith groups who had successfully completed 19 practical skills modules designed to address common social problems. The programme, offered through the Scientology Volunteer Ministers, is entirely non-denominational and open to people of all beliefs.

“This programme has put me in a position where I can actively help people in my community,” said one participating Archbishop and church founder from Motherwell. “My favorite part was discovering that I can now bring these tools directly to my neighborhood and help those who desperately need it.”

The Eastern Cape continues to experience high levels of violent crime, gender-based violence, drug abuse, and social unrest. In recent months, the region has seen violent attacks, crimes against young women, and community abductions, leading to growing concern among residents and civic leaders.

In response, the Mayor recently launched a petition campaign seeking 5,000 signatures to address the crime crisis. Additionally, local organisations like the Youth Crime Prevention Desk NMB have been organising marches and awareness drives aimed at curbing gender-based violence and restoring social cohesion.

Within this climate, faith-based organisations are increasingly stepping forward with initiatives aimed at improving day-to-day life at a grassroots level. The Volunteer Minister Tools for Life programme provides practical life skills covering conflict resolution, communication, drug prevention, and moral guidance—enabling leaders to offer effective assistance in their communities.

“We are witnessing real change in Gqeberha, and what’s remarkable is that it’s being led by the very people who live in this city,” said Sabelo Bless, Director of Public Affairs for the Church of Scientology Eastern Cape. “It speaks to the spirit of our Constitution—that this land belongs to those who live in it, and it’s our shared responsibility to care for it.”

The Tools for Life training is based on the works of L. Ron Hubbard and is designed to be accessible and applicable regardless of one’s religious background. Its modules address a broad range of life’s everyday challenges and provide straightforward, workable solutions.

Graduates of the programme have committed to implementing what they’ve learned in their local areas. Several religious leaders have already registered for upcoming seminars, with the goal of extending these tools to schools, youth groups, and community outreach initiatives across Nelson Mandela Bay.

About the company: The Church of Scientology is committed to uplifting communities through practical, non-denominational humanitarian initiatives that empower individuals to live with greater purpose, compassion, and ability.
