Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among Canadian men, representing 22 percent of new cancer diagnoses in 2024, according to the Canadian Cancer Society. It's the third leading cause of death for men in Canada, though the death rate has been declining since 1995. The decline likely reflects improved treatment options and increased awareness programs like those offered by PROSTAID Calgary. Today, the 5-year survivability rate is 91 percent.
PROSTAID Calgary holds monthly meetings that feature prominent health specialists and provide opportunities for peer connection and education. Monthly general meetings are open to anyone affected by prostate cancer, including patients, family members, and caregivers. Individuals can attend either in-person or online, with Zoom links provided for online registrants to ensure accessibility for all participants.
The organization operates three main programs: peer-to-peer mutual support for men and their families affected by prostate cancer, public awareness and education initiatives, and advocacy for provincial policy matters related to the disease. PROSTAID Calgary also hosts specialized monthly meetings for Warriors groups and Wives & Caregivers groups. The group has nearly 900 members.
