Differences Between Squirrel & Mouse Droppings: Pest Control Guide Released

Connor’s Pest Pros has released a pest control guide on identifying squirrels or mice by their droppings.

-- The latest guide has been published in response to growing rodent activity in homes nationwide. Squirrel and mouse infestations remain a risk for many homes even as temperatures warm, and experts like Connor’s Pest Pros believe effective management begins with proper identification of the invading pest, which can be achieved by examining their droppings.

Despite both being rodents, squirrels and mice differ greatly in biology and activity, and pest management approaches for one animal will not be effective against the other. For this reason, Connor’s Pest Pros’ guide says that proper management begins with identification; in the absence of pest sightings or during early stages of an infestation, any feces discovered around the property can be used to reliably determine the invading animal, even by untrained individuals.

According to Connor’s Pest Pros, one key indication of the pest species is the size of the droppings they leave behind. Squirrels are much larger than mice, and this will be reflected in their feces, which measure about 3/8 inches in length and have bulged centers and rounded ends. The location of the feces is another indicator, as squirrels do not typically invade indoor spaces; as a result, homeowners facing a squirrel infestation are more likely to find droppings concentrated in attics, crawlspaces, and areas outside the home.

On the other hand, mouse droppings are much smaller and resemble black grains of rice or dark seeds. Unlike squirrel feces, mouse pellets have pointed ends, creating a more uniform, spindle-like appearance. Additionally, mice defecate as they travel, so their droppings are typically found in trails along baseboards and in food storage areas.

Once homeowners have identified the problem pest, they are strongly encouraged to contact a professional pest control company, which can offer effective and humane treatment plans and sanitation services. After the pests have been removed, Connor’s Pest Pros says that homeowners can take proactive measures to prevent new infestations. For example, to discourage squirrels, residents should trim any tree branches that provide access to the roof, install chimney caps, and regularly inspect their home’s exterior for entry points; for mice, residents should store food in mouse-proof containers and eliminate clutter to remove as many hiding places as possible.
