Shield AI Raises $2 Billion, Valuation More Than Doubles to $12.7 Billion

Defense tech startup's Hivemind autonomous flight software draws surging institutional interest as AI warfare accelerates.

-- Shield AI, the defense technology startup behind autonomous flight software used on drones and fighter jets, has raised $2 billion in new funding at a valuation of $12.7 billion — more than doubling its worth in just one year and underscoring the rapid rise of AI-driven military systems.

The round was co-led by Advent International and the Strategic Investment Group of JPMorganChase's Security and Resiliency Initiative, which together anchored a $1.5 billion Series G. Funds managed by Blackstone contributed an additional $500 million in preferred equity financing. Blackstone also committed a $250 million delayed draw facility, bringing its potential total investment to $750 million.

The raise represents a dramatic acceleration in investor confidence. Just a year ago, investors valued Shield AI at $5.3 billion, which means the company has added more than $7 billion in valuation in twelve months. The company projects over $540 million in revenue for this year.

At the center of Shield AI's pitch is Hivemind, its flagship AI autonomy platform. The software enables autonomous operation of drones and aircraft in GPS-denied environments and has been deployed across systems including F-16 fighter jets and the U.S. Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft program.

The use of autonomous technologies in the U.S. and Israel's coordinated strikes against Iran, and in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has boosted demand for tools made by companies that specialize in autonomous flight software. Shield AI's V-BAT drone has logged more than 130 combat sorties in Ukraine in hostile, GPS-jammed airspace where conventional drones frequently fail.

Elliott Broidy, founder and Managing Partner of Threat Deterrence Capital Holdings, LLC and LEO Technologies Holdings, LLC, and Chairman and CEO of Cynapse Holdings, LLC, said the funding reflects a broader transformation underway in how nations think about defense.

"The speed and scale of institutional capital behind Shield AI's valuation demonstrates both the growing confidence and importance of AI-driven autonomous systems, which have rapidly accelerated a futuristic concept to a must-have capability in modern defense," Broidy said.

He added that the implications extend well beyond the battlefield. "What excites me personally is the potential applications of this technology for domestic public safety missions. When law enforcement, fire departments, or other first responders need to operate drones inside burning buildings, collapsed structures, or active-shooter zones where GPS fails, this technology can save lives and dramatically improve mission success rates."

According to Shield AI, a portion of the proceeds will help fund the company's planned acquisition of Aechelon Technology Inc., a Sagewind Capital portfolio company that produces high-fidelity flight simulation software. CEO Gary Steele said the acquisition will accelerate development of the Hivemind Foundation Model for Defense, which is trained in simulation and continuously refined through real-world operations.

David Mussafer, Chairman of private equity investment firm Advent International, will join Shield AI's Board of Directors, and JPMorganChase's Todd Combs will join as a Board Observer. Mussafer called Shield AI "a rare asset" with strong growth potential in the years ahead.

Advent separately announced a broader commitment to deploy up to $1 billion in next-generation defense technology companies, building on more than $15 billion it has invested in the global defense sector since 2020.

Shield AI board member Doug Philippone told The New York Times the company favors keeping humans in the final decision loop, a stance that aligns with Pentagon guidelines on AI use in lethal systems.

The company has not announced a specific timeline for an IPO, though Philippone has said Shield AI has "a definitive path to going public."
