IBC 2024: MC-IF Member Nokia Demonstrates Real-Time AI Enhanced VVC

By: PRLog

AMSTERDAM - Sept. 14, 2024 - PRLog -- IBC 2024 – Nokia, a member of the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF), will showcase its next-generation technology supporting the integration of neural network post-processing filters with Versatile Video Coding (VVC) through application of the Versatile Supplemental Enhancement Information (VSEI) standard.

Over the last few years, groups like MPEG have been exploring how neural network technology can enhance image quality and performance in video coding. The VSEI standard integrates neural network post-processing filters enabling functionality that includes video quality improvement, upscaling and enhancement of colorization and frame rate.

"This is a milestone exhibition that highlights the real-time implementation of the VSEI standard onto video quality," said Maria Santamaria, Senior Scientist for Video Coding, Nokia. "With the recent finalization of version 3 of the VSEI standard, the application of neural network filtering enables optimized video processing that benefits groups throughout the ecosystem such as encoder vendors, content providers, and end-users."

Nokia and other MC-IF member organizations will be showcasing the latest advancements around VVC technology at Hall 3, #B.21 from Sept. 13 to 16.

"Chipsets integrated with AI processing units capable of running neural network filters are beginning to enter the marketplace. Nokia will illustrate how this technology can be deployed on the latest generation of consumer devices to deliver significantly improved video content after it has been decoded. By leveraging these neural network post-processing filters, coding gains around 5 percent can be achieved while maintaining high quality video at lower bitrates," said Santamaria.

This first of its kind event points to advancements that allow content providers to tailor neural networks to enhance video compression for specific content such as video-on-demand services.  Live broadcasters can also leverage neural networks that are pre-trained for optimizing live video content on the decoder side of the production workflow.
