With just weeks remaining until Canada’s December 15, 2025 WHMIS compliance deadline, Canadian Institute of Food Safety (CIFS) is urging workplaces in the food industry to review the updated requirements and ensure their training, labels, classifications, and safety data sheets are fully compliant.
As the transition period comes to an end this year, CIFS is encouraging workplaces in the food industry to review the new rules and ensure their training, labels, classifications and safety data sheets are fully compliant.
Why the Deadline Matters for Food Businesses
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s national hazard communication standard that provides information on the safe use of hazardous products through product labels, safety data sheets and worker education and training. WHMIS helps ensure workers have the knowledge and tools to understand and safely handle hazardous products in the workplace.
Workplaces in the food industry regularly use cleaning agents, sanitizers and other hazardous products. Updated WHMIS requirements affect how these products must be labelled, classified and documented, as well as how workers must be trained to use them safely. Missing the December 15 deadline may result in non compliant labels or outdated safety data sheets, which can increase the risk of workplace injuries and create enforcement issues for employers.
“Many organisations are not fully prepared for the WHMIS changes. Our aim is to help suppliers, employers and workers understand what they need to do before the deadline so compliance and safety remain aligned,” said a spokesperson of CIFS.

CIFS provides an updated WHMIS course that reflects the amended regulations. The program has been revised to align with the new hazard classifications, labels and safety data sheets and helps employers meet their responsibility to educate workers on the updated requirements.
