EndoDiagnostic Center Positions Brazil as an Emerging Hub for Minimally Invasive Bariatric Solutions

Multicenter Brazilian study highlights endoscopic suturing as a safe and effective alternative for post bariatric weight regain treatment

(PRUnderground) December 8th, 2025

Brazilian physicians are drawing growing international attention to the country’s emergence as a reference center in minimally invasive metabolic and bariatric therapies following the publication of clinical data from a Brazilian multicenter study evaluating endoscopic suturing for weight regain after bariatric surgery.

Among the specialists contributing to this advancing field is Flavio Mitidieri Ramos, MD, MSc, an Endoscopic Bariatric Specialist and Director of Endodiagnostic. The multicenter study was published in the international scientific journal Acta Scientific Gastrointestinal Disorders and evaluated patients treated in major medical centers across São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte.

Clinical follow up extended for up to 18 months after the endoscopic suturing procedure performed with the OverStitch system as a minimally invasive alternative for managing weight regain following bariatric surgery.

According to the published results, patients demonstrated progressive and sustained total body weight reduction, with an average loss approaching 18 percent at the end of the 18 month follow up period. Excess weight loss exceeded 50 percent within the first year, demonstrating consistent and clinically relevant outcomes over time. The study also reported the absence of major complications during or after the procedures, reinforcing the safety profile of endoscopic suturing as an alternative to revisional surgery.

Weight regain after bariatric surgery is widely recognized as a multifactorial clinical challenge, influenced by both anatomical and behavioral factors. In this context, endoscopic suturing has emerged as a minimally invasive strategy capable of correcting relevant anatomical changes with lower risk, shorter recovery time, and reduced cost when compared with repeat surgical intervention.

These findings reinforce a global trend toward the growing role of minimally invasive endoscopic solutions in the long term management of obesity, according to Dr. Flavio Ramos. Endoscopic suturing allows postoperative anatomical changes to be addressed more safely while preserving quality of life.

A full member of the Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy SOBED, Dr. Ramos has played an active role in the development and clinical application of advanced endoscopic bariatric techniques in Brazil. His work reflects a broader movement that is positioning the country as a center of international reference in minimally invasive metabolic and bariatric procedures.

In the setting of rising global obesity rates and increasing weight regain after bariatric surgery, the findings from this Brazilian multicenter experience contribute to the consolidation of therapeutic endoscopy as a fundamental pillar in modern obesity management strategies.

The study further strengthens Brazil’s role in the international landscape of advanced metabolic endoscopy and highlights the country’s capacity to generate clinically relevant data aligned with current global standards in obesity care.
