February is National Heart Awareness Month and Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden invites the community to a free Healthy Heart Fair on Friday, Feb 7, from 9 am to 1 pm

(PRUnderground) February 4th, 2025

Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah is inviting the community to a free Healthy Heart Fair in honor of National Heart Awareness month in February.  On Friday, Feb 7, from 9 am to 1 pm, community members can learn how improve their heart health and reduce their risk of having a heart attack.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, and individuals across various racial and ethnic groups in the United States. However, making small changes can significantly enhance your heart health, helping you live your healthiest life, according to Michelle Bischoff, MD, an Intermountain Health cardiologist at Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

The free Intermountain Community Heart Fair will be held in the Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital Education Center (4401 Harrison Blvd, Ogden, Utah 84403). Participants are encouraged to wear red, since February 7 is National Wear Red Day.

Here are some of the free services and information that will be available at the Intermountain McKay Fee-Hospital Heart Fair:

  1. Heart Risk Assessment

Are you aware of your individual risk factors for heart disease? There will be self-assessment kits that will help you identify the things that impact your heart health so you can learn how best to address those risk factors as participants engage with heart experts at the heart fair.

  1. Blood Pressure Checks

When was the last time you had your blood pressure checked? Do you know what “normal range” is for blood pressure and how high blood pressure increases your risk of health problems? Participants will be able to get their blood pressure checked and learn what you can do to better manage this indicator of health.

  1. Heart Healthy Recipes

Eating healthy is one of the many ways you can improve your heart health. However, do you know what you should be looking for in the foods or recipes you’re whipping up? Learn from Intermountain nutrition experts about what a heart-healthy diet looks like and pick up some recipes for meals you can cook at home.

  1. Heart Healthy Exercise Tips

How many minutes of exercise do you get a week? How many minutes should you be getting and what classifies as “exercise”? Learn from experts about ways that you can improve your heart health by increasing your activity level with simple at-home workouts.

  1. Learn About Conditions, Medication, and Importance of Sleep

Throughout the day, there will be short 30-minute classes taught by heart experts. They’ll cover topics like heart arrythmias, medications, diet, exercise, sleep, and more.

  1. Heart-Healthy Refreshments

As you discuss heart health with the experts, you’ll be able to sample small, heart-healthy foods to show you how eating healthy can be delicious.

Learn About Your Numbers and Risks

Your risk of heart disease is based partly on genetics (or family history), but also on lifestyle.

The most important thing men and women can do to get ahead of heart disease is to know what your numbers are, and the risk factors you have so you and your primary care provider can plan together, said Dr. Bischoff.

Risk factors include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking (even exposure to second-hand smoke)
  • Obesity
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Physical inactivity
