LaGuardia Media Reports: House Explosion Rocks Northwest Austin. Six Injured, Two Critical

24 homes were damaged in a Northwest Austin house explosion. Six are injured, of which two are critical.

(PRUnderground) April 14th, 2025

At 11:23 AM, on April 13, 2025 the NW section of the city of Austin, TX was shaken by a loud “boom”, followed by a cacophony of sirens. The boom was caused by a residence exploding on the 10400 block of Double Spur Loop. According to Austin Fire Department Division Chief Wayne Parrish, a two-story home at 10412 and a secondary home suffered severe collapse damage from the explosion. There was also a vehicle fire at the exploding home. Responders on the scene extinguished the car fire, as well as smaller spot fires among the debris, at which point they initiated a search for people in the rubble. They located one person and transferred them to EMS for treatment. At the secondary home (10410), a second patient was located and required “extended extrication efforts” to free them from the debris. Currently, there are no spot fires, vehicle fires or remaining persons to be accounted for. However, responders are working with Animal Control trying to account for several missing neighborhood pets.

Agencies who responded to this emergency include Texas Gas, PEC Energy, Austin Water, Lake Travis Fire, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Travis County Fire Marshal, Austin P.D., Texas Department of Public Safety, Austin Travis County EMS, Texas Department of Emergency Management, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. The Red Cross was also on the scene to assist any residents that were affected. Officials characterize the explosion as an “isolated incident”. Utilities representatives on the scene confirmed that there was no underground gas service to the residence, eliminating the possibility that the explosion could have been caused by faulty gas lines.

24 homes have been damaged in the area, with homes suffering damages from blown out garage doors to blown out windows all throughout the neighborhood. The damage was mostly around the areas on Spicewood Mesa, Pantera Ridge and Mouly, but the explosion was heard as far north as Georgetown.

Austin EMS Captain Shannon Koesterer states that there are 6 total patients: two from the primary residence (one in critical condition and one in serious but stable condition), one critical patient from the secondary home, one additional adult with minor complaints that refused treatment at the scene and two firefighters with minor injuries (one transported and one refusing treatment at the scene). Injuries range from cuts and burns, to fractures from the force of the explosion.

According to Assistant Chief Thayer Smith, a 30 year veteran of the Austin Fire Department, the cause of the explosion is still unknown, and the Travis County Fire Marshal will be leading the investigation. LaGuardia Media has put several calls in to various agencies regarding this emergency and we are awaiting their comments.

Our hearts go out to our neighbors who were affected by this tragedy. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers, and we wish you, your family and your neighborhood a swift recovery.
