Dr. Philippe Smith has been appointed Chief of General Medicine at CISSSMO, overseeing staffing, care quality, and service coordination across the region.

(PRUnderground) May 13th, 2025

The Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Montérégie-Ouest (CISSSMO) is proud to announce the official appointment of Dr. Philippe Smith as Chief of the Department of General Medicine, effective May 4, 2025. Dr. Smith previously held the position on an interim basis from November 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. His nomination was confirmed by the department for a four-year term.

In his new role, Dr. Smith is responsible for overseeing and coordinating first- and second-line general medical services across the CISSSMO territory. His mandate includes ensuring proper medical staffing, upholding quality standards of practice among general practitioners, managing complaints and disciplinary matters, and aligning departmental initiatives with CISSSMO’s broader strategic objectives.

“It’s an honor to take on this leadership role and to work alongside such a dedicated group of professionals,” says Dr. Smith. “I look forward to supporting the delivery of high-quality, accessible general medical care across the Montérégie-Ouest region.”

Dr. Smith will also lead efforts to organize equitable on-call schedules, manage resource distribution, support ongoing professional development, and foster collaboration between medical staff and CISSSMO leadership. As department chief, he plays a critical liaison role—working to streamline communication, resolve system-level challenges, and implement reforms based on regular departmental input.

Dr. Philippe Smith holds a B.Sc. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Concordia University and a Medical Doctorate from the University of Montreal. He completed his residency at Maisonneuve Rosemont Hospital and currently practices at Clinique Le Trait D’Union and Anna Laberge Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, he is actively involved in medical education through the Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens (FMOQ) and serves as Vice President of AMOSO, the regional doctors’ association. As Chief of the Department of General Medicine for South West Montérégie, Dr. Smith is responsible for overseeing healthcare delivery across the region.

The Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Montérégie-Ouest (CISSSMO) is a regional health authority in Québec responsible for delivering a broad range of health and social services to communities in the Montérégie-Ouest region. Covering a population of over 400,000 residents, CISSSMO operates hospitals, CLSCs, long-term care centers (CHSLDs), and specialized rehabilitation facilities. Its mission is to provide accessible, high-quality care that meets the diverse needs of individuals and families, while promoting wellness and collaboration across the health and social services network.
