Black Philanthropy Initiative Makes History

Annual Gala “Let’s Make History Together” Becomes Largest Event in BPI’s History and Largest Seated Gala Ever Hosted at The Camby Hotel

(PRUnderground) April 7th, 2026

On Friday, February 27, 2026, the Black Philanthropy Initiative (BPI) — a permanent endowment housed at the Arizona Community Foundation dedicated to advancing equity, leadership, and social justice for African Americans in Arizona — shattered records and exceeded expectations with its annual gala, Let’s Make History Together. Held at The Camby Hotel in Phoenix, the landmark evening drew an extraordinary crowd, making it not only the largest gala in BPI’s history, but also the largest seated dinner and gala ever hosted at The Camby Hotel. True to its name, history was made.

From a stunning formal reception to an elegantly appointed seated dinner and a powerful formal program, the evening was a masterclass in community, celebration, and purpose. Guests were treated to an unforgettable experience that reflected the collective spirit and generational impact of Black philanthropy in Arizona.

A Night Built on Vision and Leadership

The evening’s success was a direct reflection of extraordinary leadership at every level. BPI extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Arizona Community Foundation and its CEO, Anna Maria Chávez, whose steadfast institutional support continues to make BPI’s mission and milestones possible.

BPI Co-Chairs Dr. Carla Gentles and Dr. Stephvanie Wynn brought vision and dedication to every aspect of the evening’s planning and execution. Event Co-Chairs Xavier Walker and Jessica Hubbard orchestrated the logistical brilliance that brought this record-breaking event to life seamlessly.

The evening was masterfully hosted by the incomparable Caribe Devine of 12News, whose warmth and grace guided guests through every memorable moment. Adding exhilarating energy to the night, BPI debuted its first-ever live auction, led with flair and finesse by auctioneer Subyn Novelle.

Celebrating Excellence: Awards and Honorees

The formal program was a tribute to those who embody the transformative power of giving back. BPI proudly celebrated the inaugural presentation of the Jean Fairfax Philanthropists of the Year Award, named in honor of the late Civil Rights Leader and BPI visionary whose 2008 dream gave birth to the Initiative. This founding honor was bestowed upon BPI’s Honorary Chairs, Tony and Florence Franklin, whose generosity and commitment to the Black community in Arizona have been nothing short of transformational.

The Community Impact Award was presented to Sounds Academy, an organization making remarkable strides in enriching the lives of young people through music education and opportunity. The prestigious BPI Legacy Award was granted to the historic community of Randolph, recognizing its enduring contributions to Arizona’s African American heritage and the ongoing strength of its community legacy.

A New Identity for a New Era

In a moment that captured the spirit of evolution and renewed purpose, BPI officially unveiled its brand-new logo during the gala’s formal program. The new visual identity marks an exciting chapter in BPI’s growth — honoring the legacy of its founders while boldly signaling the organization’s vision for the future. The unveiling was met with enthusiasm from the record-breaking crowd, a fitting tribute to an organization that continues to expand its reach and impact across Arizona.

A Show of Political Partnership and Community Support

BPI is deeply honored by the presence of Arizona’s elected leaders, whose attendance underscores the civic importance of Black philanthropy in shaping the future of our state. We extend sincere appreciation to Governor Katie Hobbs, Congressman Greg Stanton, and Phoenix Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington, along with the many other elected officials who joined us in celebrating this milestone evening. Their presence speaks volumes about the power and promise of BPI’s work.

Gratitude to Our Premier Sponsors

None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of our Premier Sponsors. BPI offers its deepest thanks to Salt River Project, Tony & Florence Franklin, TMG Hospitality USA, Comfort Keepers, Republic Services, and the Arizona Cardinals. Their investment in BPI’s mission is an investment in the future of Arizona’s Black community.

The Numbers Are Coming — And They Are Historic

The evening’s impact extended far beyond the room. BPI is thrilled to announce that the total funds raised from Let’s Make History Together will be announced soon — and the numbers reflect the extraordinary generosity of every donor, sponsor, and supporter who showed up for this movement. Stay tuned for a total that is as historic as the night itself.
