Why PubMatic (PUBM) Stock Is Up Today

PUBM Cover Image

What Happened?

Shares of digital advertising technology company PubMatic (NASDAQ: PUBM) jumped 2.6% in the afternoon session after the company announced a partnership with MNTN to expand access to premium Connected TV (CTV) advertising for marketers. The deal gave MNTN's self-serve advertising platform direct access to PubMatic's network of top-tier streaming publishers, including major names like Paramount and NBCUniversal. Early results from the collaboration showed that publishers using PubMatic's platform experienced a 10% revenue increase, driven by 14% more unique advertiser demand. The partnership also created a new path for growth by connecting with advertisers new to CTV, as nearly all of MNTN's customers had not advertised in this space before. This move tapped into a growing market, with U.S. CTV ad spending projected to reach nearly $37 billion in 2025.

The shares closed the day at $8.19, up 2.5% from previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

PubMatic’s shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 3 days ago when the stock dropped 3.2% on the news that President Trump threatened to increase import taxes on Chinese goods, reigniting trade war fears. The threat was in response to China's move to restrict its exports of rare earth minerals, which are critical to high-tech manufacturing in the U.S. The unexpected announcement shattered a monthslong calm on Wall Street, sending major indices tumbling. The S&P 500 dropped around 1.3%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 2.7%. Investors reacted by selling off stocks, particularly in the technology and retail sectors, amid concerns that escalating trade tensions could disrupt global supply chains and increase costs for companies.

PubMatic is down 44.7% since the beginning of the year, and at $8.20 per share, it is trading 52.2% below its 52-week high of $17.14 from February 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of PubMatic’s shares at the IPO in December 2020 would now be looking at an investment worth $278.44.
