Altria Earnings: What To Look For From MO

MO Cover Image

Tobacco company Altria (NYSE: MO) will be reporting earnings this Thursday before market open. Here’s what investors should know.

Altria beat analysts’ revenue expectations by 1.8% last quarter, reporting revenues of $5.29 billion, flat year on year. It was a satisfactory quarter for the company, with a decent beat of analysts’ revenue estimates but a significant miss of analysts’ gross margin estimates.

This quarter, analysts are expecting Altria’s revenue to be flat year on year at $5.32 billion, slowing from the 1.3% increase it recorded in the same quarter last year. Adjusted earnings are expected to come in at $1.45 per share.

Altria Total Revenue

Analysts covering the company have generally reconfirmed their estimates over the last 30 days, suggesting they anticipate the business to stay the course heading into earnings. Altria has missed Wall Street’s revenue estimates five times over the last two years.

Looking at Altria’s peers in the beverages, alcohol, and tobacco segment, some have already reported their Q3 results, giving us a hint as to what we can expect. Tilray delivered year-on-year revenue growth of 4.7%, beating analysts’ expectations by 2.7%, and Constellation Brands reported a revenue decline of 15%, topping estimates by 0.5%. Tilray’s stock price was unchanged after the resultswhile Constellation Brands was up 1%.

The outlook for 2025 remains clouded by potential trade policy changes and corporate tax discussions, which could impact business confidence and growth. While some of the beverages, alcohol, and tobacco stocks have shown solid performance in this choppy environment, the group has generally underperformed, with share prices down 3% on average over the last month. Altria is down 3.6% during the same time and is heading into earnings with an average analyst price target of $63.83 (compared to the current share price of $63.33).

When a company has more cash than it knows what to do with, buying back its own shares can make a lot of sense–as long as the price is right.
