Acushnet (GOLF): Buy, Sell, or Hold Post Q3 Earnings?

GOLF Cover Image

Acushnet has followed the market’s trajectory closely, rising in tandem with the S&P 500 over the past six months. The stock has climbed by 18.7% to $85.50 per share while the index has gained 13.9%.

Is now the time to buy Acushnet, or should you be careful about including it in your portfolio? Get the full breakdown from our expert analysts, it’s free for active Edge members.

Why Do We Think Acushnet Will Underperform?

We don't have much confidence in Acushnet. Here are three reasons we avoid GOLF and a stock we'd rather own.

1. Long-Term Revenue Growth Disappoints

A company’s long-term performance is an indicator of its overall quality. Any business can have short-term success, but a top-tier one grows for years. Over the last five years, Acushnet grew its sales at a 10.1% annual rate. Although this growth is acceptable on an absolute basis, it fell short of our standards for the consumer discretionary sector, which enjoys a number of secular tailwinds.

2. Mediocre Free Cash Flow Margin Limits Reinvestment Potential

If you’ve followed StockStory for a while, you know we emphasize free cash flow. Why, you ask? We believe that in the end, cash is king, and you can’t use accounting profits to pay the bills.

Acushnet has shown poor cash profitability over the last two years, giving the company limited opportunities to return capital to shareholders. Its free cash flow margin averaged 7.2%, lousy for a consumer discretionary business.

3. New Investments Fail to Bear Fruit as ROIC Declines

ROIC, or return on invested capital, is a metric showing how much operating profit a company generates relative to the money it has raised (debt and equity).

We like to invest in businesses with high returns, but the trend in a company’s ROIC is what often surprises the market and moves the stock price. Unfortunately, Acushnet’s ROIC averaged 3 percentage point decreases over the last few years. Paired with its already low returns, these declines suggest its profitable growth opportunities are few and far between.

Final Judgment

We cheer for all companies serving everyday consumers, but in the case of Acushnet, we’ll be cheering from the sidelines. That said, the stock currently trades at 21.4× forward P/E (or $85.50 per share). This valuation tells us it’s a bit of a market darling with a lot of good news priced in - we think there are better stocks to buy right now. We’d suggest looking at a dominant Aerospace business that has perfected its M&A strategy.
