Children's Health Month and Identifying Indoor and Outdoor Exposure Risks

By: WebWire

Children's Health Month takes place each October. Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) utilize this time to spread public awareness on the importance of protecting children's health from common environmental hazards they could be exposed to where they live, play and learn.

From their earliest stages of development through puberty, children are vulnerable to exposure to environmental contaminants reports the CDC. They are particularly vulnerable because their bodies are small and still developing, so they ingest and absorb more chemicals. The agency also states that children's age-appropriate behavior also exposes them to potential hazards. For example, crawling and playing on the floor or in a yard may expose them to harmful contaminants. Children also tend to put unsafe items in their mouths, such as paint chips that may contain lead.

“EPA also offers helpful tips and links to help parents and caregivers recognize potential exposure hazards,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These include everything from eliminating asthma triggers and reducing mercury exposure, to protecting children from mold, radon, lead and carbon monoxide. EMSL supports the efforts of Children's Health Month with environmental testing services for mold, bacteria, viruses, lead, asbestos, volatile organic compounds, radon and many other exposure hazards.”

With environmental testing laboratories located across the United States and Canada, EMSL also offers sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and building inspection tools to help assess exposure risks in homes, schools, daycare centers and playgrounds. They even sponsored an educational video about Children's Health Month and potential environmental hazards several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
