The Love of a Mother Can Withstand Everything, Transcending Laws and Borders

By: WebWire

Being a mother means taking care of the life of another human being, from the moment of her birth until it is no longer possible. In the case of children with special needs, the care and attention they need require more love. In a way, it is a constant struggle against society and the way in which these children are treated. Where many end up being marginalized.

In the book “Broken Wings,” the author Marjorie Glider tells the story of her personal struggle against these stigmas of society. Where she, as a mother, fought against the government and the establishment of the United States.

The book tells about her efforts to guarantee a quality of life and protection of the rights of children with special needs. Her son, Barry, was born with a rare genetic disease called Hurler's Syndrome. It is a sugar problem which destroys the body mentally and physically although they are born normal. Because of the excessive sugar, they become very hyperactive and loud. Due to this, Barry was expelled from the public school system at 7 years old. This was before the passage of Public Law 94142 which guarantees a free public education for everyone. Their pastor found an experimental school nearby which was an alternative to institutions for families who loved their children and kept them at home. After Barry's passing, the school was to be shut down as a fire hazard. Marge led a bond referendum which gave them the money for a new school. Barry had left his mark on this earth and for those who will come after him. Marge sought to change the way society views special needs children. Her fight was before the entire system and reached the White House.

This autobiographical work is only 184 pages long. From the first chapter, you can feel the mother's love in each of the words. At the same time, we get to see Marjorie Glider's internal battles as she struggles with and cares for her special needs child.
