Leonard Legal Group Files Lawsuit Against Hillsdale Board of Education Over Child Sexual Abuse

Justice Delayed is Not Always Justice Denied

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ, September 13, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Leonard Legal Group has filed a lawsuit in Bergen County Superior Court against the Hillsdale Board of Education and George White Elementary School, alleging that the school system failed to protect a second-grade student from repeated sexual abuse by his teacher, Howard Schultz, in the 1980s.

The complaint asserts that the school district breached its duty to safeguard children in its care, enabling Schultz to exploit his position of authority to commit acts of sexual abuse against a vulnerable child.

This case follows Leonard Legal Group's recent representation of another survivor of Schultz's abuse. In that case, which also named the Hillsdale Board of Education as a defendant, went to trial in June in Bergen County Superior Court and resulted in a $3 million dollar settlement while the jury was deliberating.

"Schools are entrusted with protecting children. When they fail in that duty, the consequences can last a lifetime," said attorney Scott G. Leonard, founding partner of Leonard Legal Group and a Certified Civil Trial Attorney. "We are committed to holding institutions accountable and giving survivors the chance to seek justice—even decades later."

Leonard Legal Group is also seeking information from any former George White Elementary School students who may have been abused by Schultz and encourages anyone with information or similar experiences to come forward confidentially.

"Our clients are brave and courageous to come forward years after the horrific sexual abuse they suffered," added Leonard. "It is an honor and a privilege to represent them."

Under New Jersey law, survivors of childhood sexual abuse can pursue claims against both abusers and the institutions that enabled them. Leonard Legal Group has been at the forefront of advocating for survivors, securing significant settlements across the state and ensuring accountability for schools, churches, and other institutions.

For more than 29 years, Leonard Legal Group has represented survivors of sexual abuse across New Jersey, allowing them to hold their abusers—and the institutions that harbored them—accountable.
