Author B.J. Cyprian Enlightens Readers on the Universality of Grief in The Gray Line, a Powerful Thriller that Blurs the Lines of Right and Wrong

B.J. Cyprian’s The Gray Line is an emotionally charged thriller centered on loss, and the importance of empathy and interpersonal connection when faced with unimaginable grief and pain.

B.J. Cyprian is a dreamer, creator, and a perpetual student of life and the beauty that always exists within the chaos. Brought up in a small and religious Texas town, she spent her life as an artist in search of the right medium. From drummer to author, singer to narrator, the same underlying message drives her work: love.

B.J. has written two books: Shadow Resistance and The Gray Line. Her writing seeks to unify the world with laughter, humanity and empathy, and has been recognized with numerous international literary awards including Literary Titan’s Bestselling Book of the Year, an Independent Author Network Book of the Year Finalist and as part of the longlist in BookViral’s Millenium Book Award.

This one-on-one interview shares B.J. Cyprian’s background and experience in writing The Gray Line.

Tell us about The Gray Line.

The Gray Line is a modern-day story of grief, abuse, and finding the strength to move on.

The book follows Angel Lamb, who has overcome many obstacles in her three decades of life. Rescued from an abusive environment at a young age, Angel has a realistic and cynical outlook on life, yet a strong sense of right and wrong. After she loses her wife in a tragic automobile accident, Angel joins a local grief support group in hopes of finding a way to deal with her crushing loss.

When members of the group begin to befall tragedy, Angel is forced to face her painful past as well as an uncertain future. As Angel and her new friends attempt to find answers, they are led down a dark path where each discovery only leads to more questions.

What inspired you to write The Gray Line?

Unlike my debut novel, Shadow Resistance, my goal when I started The Gray Line was to write a full story in fewer words. The book started with the question: What would happen if a grief group ran into a vigilante?

After the untimely death of my older sister in 2019, the manuscript transformed from simple, creative fiction, to a cathartic release.

My voice, one that has created itself out of pain, trauma, and healing its scars with gold, is meant to entertain, teach and find the beauty in the pain and commonality of all people.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

I’ve been writing ever since I was a child, and I have always gravitated towards mysteries. One of my childhood friends found a play I wrote in 2nd Grade about a kid detective agency.

I’ve always loved the idea of teasing, “I know something, and if you stick with me, I’ll tell you,” that comes with writing in the mystery/thriller genre.

Additionally, when one has lived a life like mine, it’s satisfying to give a reason to the evils of the world.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

The main message in all my work is to remind readers of the human part of human nature.

These days, it’s so easy to have a siloed belief pattern based only on who you know. Instead, I embody the voices of the world around me. I like to write characters that have gone through different things, but are no different than someone you could meet in a supermarket. In a world full of cacophony and dissent, my vision is always about love and connection.

Purchasing the Book

The Gray Line has received positive reviews from well-renowned literary organizations, authors, and reviewers around the world. Literary Titan Book Reviews writes, “Author B.J. Cyprian’s work is colored with suspense, depravity, and a critical sensibility. The author leads us through tortuous paths between right and wrong and shows readers how the lines blur with each new situation…this is a book that will stay with you long after you have put it down.” In addition, Franklin Bauer from The Book Commentary writes, “A well-crafted tale of loss, love, and the undeniable pain of living in a gray zone…unforgettable.

Unputdownable, emotionally chilling, and intense, The Gray Line, is available for sale on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, Google Play. Readers are encouraged to purchase their copy today: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09FW9ZPF9/
