Andrew L. Urban Uses Court Transcripts, Diaries, and Personal Reflections to Pen Presumption of Evil

Australia - Renowned journalist, author, and documentary filmmaker Andrew L. Urban has released his latest book, Presumption of Evil, a deeply personal and investigative work that dives into the real-life case of Noel Greenaway, an elderly man wrongfully convicted of serious crimes based solely on accusations made decades after the alleged events. Released in February 2024, the book takes readers on a journey through the court transcripts, personal diaries, family recollections, and character references-a multi-layered perspective on a case that has captivated public attention.

Drawing on an array of sources including court transcripts, personal diaries, and uniform glowing character references, Urban reconstructs the tragic story of Noel Greenaway, a respected member of his community and a model citizen in his late 70s. Greenaway was convicted of 18 charges of physical abuse alleged to have occurred when he was in his 30s, based solely on the testimony of five women who, as juvenile delinquent inmates, came forward with their accusations in later middle age. These women, who had never previously mentioned the allegations, made their claims simultaneously, sparking a case that would ultimately destroy Greenaway’s life.

The book also combines news clippings and emotional family narratives to chronicle the events that turned the beloved patriarch of the Greenaway family into a pariah within his community. Urban’s research provides an in-depth look at the heartache and turmoil that the family endured throughout the investigation and trial, with Greenaway’s conviction occurring despite the absence of physical evidence or prior complaints.

When asked about his motivation for writing the book, Urban reflected, “My investigation into the prosecution of Noel Greenaway provides a revealing insight into a deeply troubling case. This book records Noel’s extraordinary achievements, the unwavering support of his family, and the loyalty of his many friends. The central question is whether the Rule of Law truly prevailed in this tragedy – and I believe it is for the reader to decide. I hope this book generates outrage because, in my view, justice can only be achieved when those unaffected by a case are as outraged as those directly involved.”

Urban continues, “The best remedy for injustices of the past is to cast the brightest light upon them, and Presumption of Evil aims to be that light. It calls attention to the failures of our criminal justice system and challenges the legal profession to ‘heal thyself’ from the ugly sores of injustice that have taken root within it – sores that weep with the tears of the wrongfully convicted.”

Presumption of Evil is available now on Amazon and other major retailers.
