How to Prolong the Life of Your Motorcycle

There’s no denying that owning and riding a motorcycle is a unique experience. It’s also a significant investment, whether you purchase it in cash or take out a motorcycle loan. That’s why it’s important to maintain your bike and ensure it lasts as long as possible.

Whether you’re new to motorcycle ownership or consider yourself a seasoned vet, you can keep these tips in mind to help you prolong the life of your motorcycle.

Wash Your Motorcycle Regularly

When dirt accumulates on your motorcycle, its components can wear and tear much faster. By washing your bike often, you can keep dirt and dust from entering the engine and other parts. The general rule of thumb is to wash your motorcycle every two to three months. All you need is some basic equipment and products like a bucket of water, degreaser, old toothbrush, a few clean cloths, and motorcycle wax.

Keep It Out of the Rain and Sun

Too much rain can lead to rust and wreak havoc on your motorcycle. Excessive sun can also harm its handlebar grips, gaskets, foot pegs, and other rubber components, making them less effective. That’s why keeping it in a garage, storage unit, or shed is a good idea. If you don’t have access to any of these, you’ll want to protect the bike with a cover when it’s not being used.

Opt for Ethanol-free Gas

You may be surprised to learn that the gas you put in your motorcycle matters. While filling it with cheap ethanol gas may be tempting, especially when fuel prices are on the rise, doing so can cost you in the long run. This is because ethanol can damage the rubber and plastic parts. It might also lead to water contamination and create engine deposits. By treating your bike to ethanol-free gas, you can easily extend its lifespan.

Change the Oil

If you own a car, you likely change your oil on a regular basis. Fresh oil is also vital for your bike as it keeps it running smoothly. Most manufacturers recommend that you change your oil every 2,000 miles. However, you should turn to your owner’s manual or contact your manufacturer for details on the ideal oil replacement schedule. Also, do your best to check your engine oil quality and level before and after every long ride.

Practice Safe Riding Habits

While motorcycles are often associated with thrills and risks, it’s important to ride them safely to increase their lifespan and protect yourself. Avoid sudden and hard accelerations and stay below the speed limit as much as possible. Also, refrain from distractions and pull over to a safe, covered space if you’re riding in a storm or other inclement weather conditions.

The Bottom Line

Maintaining your motorcycle is essential to get the most out of your investment. It’s important to wash it frequently, protect it from the rain and sun, use ethanol-free gas, change the oil, and ride safely. As long as you follow these tips, you can ensure your bike brings you joy for years to come.
