Church of Scientology South Africa Premieres “Operation: Something Can Be Done About It.” to Inspire Hope and Help

Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa - December 14, 2023 —

On the 6th of Dec, the Church of Scientology South Africa, also known as Castle Kyalami, invited the community to join them for the premiere of “Operation: Something Can Be Done About It”, a feature-length documentary produced by Scientology Media Productions. The film documents the response of the Church of Scientology and its Volunteer Ministers to the Covid pandemic, not only to help parishioners and staff but to reach out indiscriminately on an unparalleled scale across the globe to ensure the safety of every sector of society.

The premiere was attended by over 500 community leaders, volunteers, government officials, religious leaders and private sector partners. Almost 50 % of the international documentary features the incredible humanitarian work done by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers in South Africa to safeguard their country. The Volunteers in South Africa contributed millions of volunteer hours on the frontlines working with authorities to curb the spread of the virus. They decontaminated over 70,000 buildings nationwide from hospitals, clinics, old age centers and many other public facilities. Over 1 million taxis, ambulances, buses and other public vehicles all for free to assist the most vulnerable.

The film captures their unwavering commitment to providing aid and support to communities in need during this unprecedented time. It showcases their creed in action: to not ignore the pain and suffering in the world but to confront it with practical help and compassion. By always pushing forward the intentions of the founder of the religion L. Ron Hubbard, of contributing to making a better society for all to live.

“They have provided disaster relief as well as social and spiritual support to health care workers and the broader community throughout the covid-19 pandemic and beyond across the entire Gauteng province.” - Gauteng Department of Health.

The documentary, which aired as part of International Volunteer Day, pays homage to the spirit and power of volunteerism. It highlights the Volunteer Ministers' proactive approach, from distributing protective gear, tons of food to starving families, to sanitizing tens of thousands of public properties and offering emotional support. The film also sheds light on the intensive training these volunteers undergo, preparing them to handle emergencies and provide relief efficiently.

“What they did for our police department during Covid was hands down an absolute blessing,” said a police officer the Church helped with sanitization. “In a time of complete panic and fear, they stepped up with help.... I am proud to have worked alongside every member.”

“You did not let your volunteers or staff sit there but you gave them a way to do something and told them, ‘OK, let’s go. We are doing this,’” said a neighbor.

Referring to the Church’s initiative to provide essential information on how to stay well and prevent the spread of the virus, a human rights leader and author said, “It was very enlightening the way the documentary showed how you educate those who don’t know, especially in impoverished areas. You teach people where they don’t know. You empower people.”

The pandemic had an indelible effect on the entire generation who lived through it. Many have not yet recovered. So, in many ways, the message that “Something can be done about it” is as important now as it was over the past three years.

"Operation: Do Something About It" not only chronicles the efforts of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers but also serves as a call to action for viewers. It shows how when people come together, no matter how big or small the effort, they can make a difference. The movie tells a motivating story that urges individuals to think about how they can contribute to making society better.

The documentary showcases the strength of the soul when confronted with challenging circumstances. It follows the volunteers as they engage in various relief activities, emphasizing their dedication and the tangible impact of their work.

“We are all about humanity,” said a teacher who attended the premiere. “So, it was very inspiring. The community is still recovering. Without people like you helping, I don’t know where we’d be.”

Essentially, the movie celebrates the impact of volunteering and how dedicated individuals can bring about change. It encourages viewers to engage in making the world a better place, emphasizing that anyone has the potential to make a difference. "Operation; Do Something About It" ultimately reminds us that during times, coming together with empathy and unity can guide us towards a much better future.
