According to the report, the misuse of ketamine is now responsible for thousands of new treatment cases annually, with a notable rise in young adults and student populations. Key Findings from Providence Projects’ Report

Sharp Increase in Treatment Demand: In the UK alone, the number of individuals seeking residential treatment for ketamine addiction climbed from 426 in 2015 to 1,551 in 2022, escalating to 2,211 new cases in 2023.

Overdose Cases on the Rise: In the United States, emergency departments reported an 81% increase in ketamine poisoning and overdose cases between 2019 and 2021, as private “ketamine clinics” increasingly prescribe the drug to patients suffering from depression—sometimes without sufficient focus on addiction risks.

Skyrocketing Search Queries: Since 2015, Google search queries about ketamine addiction have surged by 2,500% in the UK and 4,300% in the US, underscoring growing public concern.

Historical Shift in Usage: Originally developed for anesthetic purposes in human and veterinary medicine, ketamine gained popularity as a recreational drug in the 1990s. Since 2015, usage has significantly grown among youth and student populations, with surveys revealing that 1.6% of UK individuals aged 16-24 used ketamine in the past month, compared to 0.3% in 2015.

Increase in General Population Exposure: Usage among adults aged 16-59 in the UK has also increased, with 3.7% of individuals having tried ketamine at least once, up from 2.4% in 2015.

According to Newcastle Police, ketamine has established a prominent presence on university campuses, particularly among students who may underestimate the drug's dangers.
