The threat for ice threat is increasing. According to WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth, that could lead to more power outages.



Snow-ice storm: State of Emergency issued, 1-3 inches of snow possible across central NC

I'm WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell. We're getting ready for Friday into Saturday. Both WRAL weather alert days due to the impending winter storm. A winter storm warning is in effect for most of our viewing area. This system is going to have a big impact, not just on North Carolina, but a good part of the country as well. All the areas in pink under that winter storm warning. The three counties in our viewing area that are not are. County as well as Cumberland County and Wayne County, still a winter weather advisory though in those counties, which is a tear down in severity. The system that we're tracking is this area of low pressure centered over Texas that's going to head our way as we head into Friday evening. Here's the latest WYEL snow forecast. This is not model data. Instead, meteorologist Mike Mays and myself collaborated to put together these numbers 1 to 3 inches. Of snow from Raleigh Point's north and an inch or less of snow from Raleigh Point south. Raleigh is going to be right along that dividing line there. We also have an increasing threat for ice, and that means freezing rain, sleet. Those are going to be a concern. As for the ice forecast, it's 0.1 of an inch or less, so lower impacts north of Raleigh, but from Raleigh south, that's that zone where we could see up to 1.25 of an inch. Of ice and that could lead to some scattered power outages. That threat increasing right now. It looks like the greatest concern for that would be Harne, Johnston County, up into Wilson County, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, where we could see scattered power outages, but we could still see that corridor shift a bit, so I encourage you to keep checking in for updates. Here's the three most important things to know What falls is going to stick during the evening.Road conditions will rapidly deteriorate. It's not just. Snow we're going to see freezing rain, sleet mixing in around the triangle. So fortunately more of a wintry mess than a wintry wonderland. But you know it's still our best chance for snow that we've seen in years in the triangle in 11,0077 days. So there's still that sledding potential for sure. Friday during the day we are dry. We start to see some of this precipitation move in as we head between about 4 and 5 o'clock in the western half of our viewing area. Even though it's green here, when I look at this in 3D, I'm really thinking the onset as this begins, it's going to be a snow and sleet mixture. So that quickly deteriorates across the area. 78 o'clock, we get some heavier snow that starts to move in, but also some sleet mixing in especially. And then as we get past midnight, that's going to be when we really could see more icing, freezing rain moving into the triangle, and more rain in our southern. plain rain there. Still snow in Roxborough at 3 a.m., but that freezing rain line shifting farther to the north through the morning hours Saturday. But by 8 a.m. Saturday, most of us are going to be dry and done with this event. Once we get past 8 a.m., we're drying out 43 for the highs, so we should see some good melting on Saturday. But that'll refreeze Saturday night down to 22 for the low. Luckily, as we head into Sunday and Monday, we will warm right back up.
