Potential Tropical Cyclone #6 is moving northward as Francine in the coming days. WRAL meteorologists are also watching two other waves that have a good chance of developing in the Atlantic.

Hurricane season 2024: New system forming in Atlantic likely to become Francine

Hello, everyone. I'm meteorologist, Mike Mays and the WRL severe weather center with our tropical update for this Sunday evening. Have plenty going on. We have a new potential tropical cyclone that's developed in the Bay of Campeche. Talked about this last week where something moving in that region could develop. We've been waiting for quite some time for Francine. Francine could show up at the beginning of the work week. Elongated area of low pressure. Top winds are about 50 MPH per the National Hurricane center. The five o'clock advisory, 575 miles south of Port Arthur, Texas moving northwest at five. Again, top winds are at 50. It's a slow mover. But the way the upper level winds are, this will eventually get picked up should become tropical storm Francine, maybe even hurricane Francine making landfall between Texas and Louisiana and then the remnants making their way up into the mid Mississippi Valley at this point. It does not look like it would have an impact or at least a direct impact here in North Carolina. There are signs are some of its outlying moisture could make way here by Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So we'll watch for that potential. In the meantime, we have a couple of other systems we'll get to in a second. These are the tropical model plots showing basically a consensus where the hurricane center's forecast track is heading into far eastern Texas, southwester Louisiana, and then the remnants making the way across the mid Mississippi Valley. So we got a couple of other systems not looking all that impressive, but the probabilities are quite high. Something could form where you see the orange. That's about a 50% chance over the next seven days, we could see a tropical system. The red is about a 70% chance a high chance over the next seven days. We could see tropical development and here are the model plots showing where that system could go and it looks like it could eventually take a turn to the north before getting to North Carolina. That would be one to watch. So Francine in the Gulf after that would be Gordon, we'll see if this becomes Gordon. So that is our tropical update for this Sunday evening. Thanks for joining me.
